Florida pastor shoots armed former employee

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say the pastor of a central Florida church shot and wounded an employee during a gunfight after the employee learned he was being fired.

The Osceola County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that Living Water Fellowship Church Pastor Terry Howell had been meeting with maintenance worker Benjamin Parangan Tuesday to terminate Parangan's employment with the Kissimmee church.

Witnesses say Parangan pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at Howell. He wasn't hurt but returned fire with his own weapon and hit Parangan.

Officials say Parangan was listed in stable condition at a hospital.

Deputies are investigating the shooting as a case of self-defense. Authorities say charges are pending against Parangan.

Earlier this month, Pastor James "Tripp" Battle was fatally shot at his Bradenton church.


And they don't reserve seats in his church either.

Sounds like a crazy situation, but the pastor probably knew the employee quite well and knew how volatile the employee is, and thus the pastor packed accordingly. Firing people is dangerous nowadays. Even if the pastor had fired him in the presence of police, the guy could have come back later at any time on a shooting rampage.

really....he was smart to carry a weapon???? you do know they reported that there was a day care facility there also...luckily no children were shot from the stray bullets that were fired

Yes, he was very smart to be carrying his weapon and even smarter to use it to protect his own life. Thanks to this pastors quick reaction in using his carry weapon, this raged shooter did not get the opportunity to fire anymore bullets into the pastor or into any children in the day care facility, be it by accident or not.

Did anyone read the article on Fox news site that a two year old killed his mother?

It seems that the 29 year old mom had a loaded pistol in her purse. The child was sitting in the shopping cart, rummaged through mom's purse, found the pistol, and shot mom - killing her. This took place in a Walmart in Idaho.

Yep, the mom had a concealed carry permit.

Yep, those pistols really save lives, don't they?

first let me start by saying i'm not against an individual having a concealed weapon permit....what I am against is that they are carrying the weapon where my kids are being cared for.....if he was carrying it because he thought there may be a problem when he fired this individual he should have called the police in for help.....he (rambo) just got real lucky no one else was hurt

If the police are called to assist in firing someone, I doubt they would come. Let's say they did though, what is the person who did the firing supposed to do thereafter? Ask for permanent bodyguards from the police? So maybe your kids are not around when something happens, but someone else probably will be when the individual returns. I seriously doubt this was the first time the pastor had fired his weapon.

Let's change things up a bit. What if your kids were in that school and someone entered the school with the intent of harming the children and had a weapon. Would you still not want anyone around who was carrying?

The person most likely to be shot by your gun is you, which is why you need a gun, to protect yourself from yourself.

The best article in the NRA magazine last year was about the Tennessee man who was trying to holster his gun while driving down the road and shot off his *****. OUCH!!!
