I am currently visiting my kids and grand kids in Maine. They took me to the Yarmouth Clam Festival. Now over the years I have attended many community festivals and I can say that I have never been to a festival where they failed to display even one American flag! There was none on the grand stand where they had clam shucking contests, none at the finish line of their race, none at the children's area, none by the food vendors, none by the art booths, none even at the police station right there by the big tents! Shame on them! I never even saw a Maine flag!
I complained at the tent where they sold festival t shirts and posters and was told that the Boy Scouts had one at opening ceremonies the day before! So they showed it for 5 minutes rolled it up and put it away and you are proud of that? They touted a crowd of over 100,000 in attendance with mostly young families. Is this what they are teaching the young residents and visitors? What a contrast to The Villages where flags fly in business areas, rec centers and residential neighborhoods. Shame on Yarmouth Maine! |

Quick crawlers at Yarmouth Clam Festival's Diaper Derby
I wonder how many other people noticed this about the US flag not being up?? |

I am a proud American but do not need to see a flag to remind me of where I am. I suspect Americans are unique in their sensitivity to this issue. When travelling abroad you just don't see national flags everywhere like seen here. Perhaps the good people of Yarmouth are proud in that reserved Maine manner. How were the clams?

I went to Israel two years ago. I saw the familiar blue/white flags hanging everywhere!!! I mean everywhere. Out of windows like crazy. Everywhere you went you saw these flags. I even bought one to bring home with me. They have a real sense of National Pride. We are losing it.

The clams at the festival were over cooked just short of burned but the day before my kids took me to Orchard Beach and the clams near the boardwalk were awesome!
This was my first visit to the area so I was anxious to try the local dishes. |

We often were in the vicinity of Yarmouth Maine. I can assure you that they honor their flag.....
Senior citizen I can assure you there were NO flags at the clam festival!! I wrote an email to festival director and he told me they "were not a Fourth of July festival" huh? While continuing my visit to the area my son took me to several lovely state parks. I spoke with other visitors, some who were veterans, and they were shocked and dismayed by my observation. I will repeat my observation. I have been to many festivals in different parts of the country and the Yarmouth Clam festival was the only one that failed to have any American flags displayed! There were 100,000 visitors. |
