Default Wisdom is more precious pearl when doing gas repairs and stove hook ups

THIS A PUBLIC NOTICE

A Long Island man suffered serious burns and injuries when a boat he was riding on exploded in a canal on Thursday, local authorities said.

The dramatic scene was captured on video in Orowoc Creek canal in Islip shortly after 10:15 p.m. on Sunday night, The Islip Fire Department said.

Officials determined that a propane explosion had occurred onboard the sailboat, causing significant damage to the craft and trapping an occupant inside of the cabin underneath debris. The fire was already out by the time fire officials arrived.

Dramatic surveillance video footage of the blast, obtained by CBS News, shows the boat violently burst into flames while docked in the water, sending debris flying in all directions.

The most significant difference between propane and natural gas is that propane gas is HEAVIER than air. If propane gas leaks, it does not tend to vent safely into the air. Rather, it settles in low areas, both inside a structure or outside.
Alcohol stoves are the preferred method used in boats since it's fumes are lighter than air ALSO

Compressed Natural Gas

It's a very clean-burning fuel and burns hotter than alcohol. It also has an advantage over LPG in that it is lighter than air. So it is a much safer gas.
I have seen propane grills on pontoon boats which are on the main deck (only deck).
Mechanical connections should use an approved Teflon tape or pipe dope and tested with a simple leak detection soap solution which will bubble showing gas leak

This happened before my move there in the 1970s. A Los Alamos scientist shunted his gas meter so he could heat his swimming pool without paying for the gas. I guess he thought as a big time PhD physicist he could figure out how to safely do it himself on the sly. Long story short: gas leaked into the walls of his house. One day the house blew up. Fortunately no one was home but they never found the dog. Then someone took up a collection to pay for a rebuild of the house as the insurance would not cover it.
