We are making ready for a cross country trip in a full size SUV and want to not put anymore "stuff" inside the car than we have to. If anybody has used one of these "baskets" that attach to the trailer hitch.....are they as effective as they look like they could be?

Does the weight that far back from the wheels affect the steering?

Does the basket wiggle and wobble in the hitch?

We are considering either one of these or the usual top of the vehicle type.

Comments/suggestions please.

I used a basket type carrier recently to haul luggage to a cruise
ship. Worked great, I didn't even know that it was on the back of my
SUV and no noticeable steering change. I was able to put six (6) suitcases in the basket

They work fine, but should probably be used for bulky but reasonably lightweight cargo. putting too much weight in the basket could overload it (follow manufacturer guidelines) and lighten the steering on the front wheels.

Some hitches have a bolt that you can tighten that will keep it from rattling or moving.

Be sure to wrap the cargo to protect it from rain and road debris.

And last, but not least, don't forget it's back there when you're backing-up!!

I wanted to put a basket in the rear of my SUV, but, with stuff in it, the operation of the rear hatch/door was blocked. I bought a front receiver made by CURT. Luckily, my application required no drilling or alterations. Straight bolt-on.

As far as wobble, I bought a "StowAway Hitch Tightener" from amazon.
