To my knowlege if you plan on using dirt in your planter it will smell. If you use litter you can change it frequently. Why not an enclosed litter box camouflaged with plants. Will your cat be able to use the planter when it rains?

We put our cat litter box on the lanai and had a cat door in the slider. Worked perfectly. When it was in the laundry room it smelled even when it was clean. We put it behind a patio chair and no one even knew it was there.

Having once had a cat for 17 years I'm just curious if there is a screen material that a cat, with claws, would not destroy in trying to get to a lizard crawling on the outside?

Same here, and it works great. We have a cat door in the slider & we put our litter box on the lanai under a little table with a tablecloth on it & a plant on top so nobody accidentally uses the table. Works just fine, but with the Florida heat you'll want to use something that you can clean every day. I think dirt in a planter area would make your lanai smelly, and kitty litter would turn to cement if the rain hit it.

I had one of these boxes several years ago when I lived in a condo. I had 2 1/2 baths but I didn't want a litter box in the bathrooms!

I thought the electric litter box would be a great solution. But, I stopped using it and went back to my old box. The rake that went across the box to remove the debris was always getting clogged with the wet litter. And, I was about knocked over from the odor when I opened the lid to dispose of the used litter!!

I still have two cats and I am using the old style box!

Our three cats are on the lanai all the time. There is a oak tree in the back yard complete with a squirrel that loves to climb the lanai screens and screech at the cats. Our 4 YO 12# female (avatar pic) goes after it on the screens and, so far, hasn't done much damage the screens. Guess we are lucky the 16# male doesn't climb them. Our next door neighbor has a Jack Russell and it goes ballistic when the squirrel gets on their lanai screens.

There is a type of pet-proof screen. Just google 'pet proof screen' and you'll see many different types. We had it installed on our slider screen back home, the the cats couldn't snag it & the big dog couldn't tear it with her claws. It's much heavier than regular screen, and it costs a lot more, but it really works.
