Default Want to adopt a dog....but

My husband and I would love to adopt another dog to complete our family. We currently have one dog who is grieving over the loss of her brother. We have been to some shelters and actually were told that we were too old to adopt. They have age limits of 65. We are active seniors who love dogs, and we just bought a new house with a very nice fenced yard just waiting for our new dog.

We are looking for a male dog (our other dog is a girl) who is a cuddler and likes to go for car rides. We would prefer a dog between 20 and 40 lbs.

If you know of any male dog that needs to be rehomed, please contact me. Thank you.

Have you checked out the website page for South Lake Animal League? They are roughly 13 mins from Leesburg. You can Google them. If you are a senior and adopt a senior dog you will get a discount, too. One of my dogs came from them.

Please consider Maxine Hirsch at Max's Pet Connection. Maxine operates a private dog rescue organization and works tirelessly to find new homes for dogs in her care. We adopted our beagle from there and can personally recommend her.
Each Saturday Maxine has adoptable dogs at PetSmart. She is now alternating between the two PetSmart stores. Call the store to find out where she is on which Saturday.

The Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County does not set a maximum age limit on the adopter but it does suggest that as adopters mature to have a plan in place for family, friends or a shelter/rescue be willing to accept your pet(s) when you an no longer able to care for it due to injury, illness or your passing. Also have a "Plan B" go to person as the initial choice may have their own lives change by the time this need occurs. Adopt Pet | Central Fl | Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County,FL

We will not consider Max's Pet Connection. We adopted an adorable beagle from Maxine who was heartworm positive. Max paid for her vet appointments for six months. However, our dog was so very sick from the heartworms, nothing helped her. She lived 15 more months and at the vet's recommendation, we put her down. It cost us over $1,500 in vet fees for the remainder of her life not including her euthansia fees. My husband is a little bitter over this.

I am so sorry to read your post. I know the heartbreak of losing a dog.

Also, consider contacting Susan Gros who works with Poodle & Pooch rescue. She is a member of this forum and also NextDoor (Tamarind Grove). They work mainly with small dogs, but could have some in the 20-lb range. They would not adopt out a puppy to seniors but will place an older dog (5 years).

Have had the same problem with age restrictions from shelters. I have a couple of web sites that rescue dogs on my bookmarks and check them frequently. Hubby wants to buy me a new puppy....NO WAY. I admit I'm not of the frame of mind that I was years ago about training a new pup. The one thing I do find sad is that there so many pit bulls or pit mixes on these sites, or some kind of hound. Sorry but I don't think it would be a good choice for TV.

I have contacted Susan and asked permission to give you her email, or else she will get on the forum and contact you. Good luck with your search. Some dog is going to get very lucky. :-)

We got Ellie from Maxine. She was 6 years old, bad teeth that needed pulling and a very bad case of heart worms. She is such a great dog
Ellie is now 15 years old and going strong.

Bless you for taking her with all her warts. Can you post a picture of that senior sweetheart?
