Default Stop barking

I live in a courtyard villa and have a dog. I don’t let her bark outside where she can be heard, but she does bark inside the villa, where no one hears her.

I am planing on moving into a condo where someone will live above me and will share a side wall with someone.

I need to stop Cookie from barking at noises before I move. My question is, has anyone used a spray collar to stop barking? It seems the best, but some say the smell lasts too long ao the dog. Others say it may only take a few sprays until they learn.

Any suggestions, opinions etc. would be appreciated. Thank you!

My granddogs use a bark collar when they visit. They only need it on for a little while then they behave.

Saw this (joke) on Redit about bark collars the other day:

"So my neighbors have been complaining that my dog has been barking non-stop. I hate the electric zapping bark collars so I purchased a humane citronella collar, that way when the dogs barked, it shot out a blast of citronella under their nose and they don't like it. This particular morning I was getting the collar ready and filled it with its stuff. And that's where my morning should have ended. But no, it's me, and I begin to become curious as to how said collars work.

Now I'm standing on my back porch "barking" at my dog's collar. Nothing happens. I make sure it's turned on, check the fill level, and go through the "getting started" check list one more time. Again, I bark. Nothing happens. Now I'm not quite sure, why I had this next thought, but I did; I put on the collar. I seriously extended the band and fit the growl box against my throat and barked. Apparently, the collar only works if it feels vibrations, because I immediately received a blast of citronella to the face.

I began coughing, which only caused the collar to continue to squirt bug spray over and over into my nasal cavity.I'm now on my hands and knees in my back yard, trying to breathe, and to make matters worse, the dogs are now barking. So between coughing and yelling at the dogs to shut up, I've emptied over a dozen blasts of citronella to my face. During all of this ruckus, I'm trying to undo the clasp of the collar, which has somehow managed to weld shut during this whole fiasco.

I finally get the collar off and threw, yes I threw that crazy (inhumane) thing across the yard, and lay in the grass sucking in the cool morning air. In the middle of thinking this probably the dumbest thing I've done in a while, I hear laughter. MY NEIGHBOR SAW THE WHOLE THING! He was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe. Between gasps, he tells me,"I was gonna come help, but every time I started to climb over the fence, you'd set it off again and then I would started laughing and couldn't make it" So now, not only are my eyes red, but my face and ears are too. After checking to make sure I was ok,we parted ways and I went in to shower so I wouldn't be smelling like ode de' Tiki Torch."

I am the op. I have decided against a sprat collar. Scent stay to long in dog’s nose and is irritating.

Looking at sound emitters and virbrators.

It depends on the dog, its age, and what it's responding to.

If it's an older dog of a breed known to alert when there's new sensory stimulation in the vicinity (like the UPS driver delivering a package, or a squirrel jumping on the lanai screen, or the sound of a neighbor's dog, for example) then I'd say just suck it up and accept it. The dog is doing its job. You wouldn't want to be cozy in your bed one night, enjoying blissful and silent slumber, while someone breaks in and robs your house - because you've trained your dog to NOT bark.

If it's a puppy, you can train it easily with just a spray-bottle of water and your voice. When it barks, you spritz it and say, firmly, QUIET.

When he obeys, you give him a treat, or pet his head and raise the tone of your voice to praise his behavior "Good Quiet!".

And you just keep doing that until he gets the idea and does it on his own. But YOU have to be consistent, and you have to test him by having friends come to visit, or walk around back and scratch at the screen, or otherwise recreate the situations that cause him to bark.

If he's barking because he hates being alone, obviously that method won't work. That's separation anxiety and involves a whole other method of training.

If you haven't already purchased the condo - I would give that whole scenario a serious re-think.

Buying (or even renting) a dwelling where neighbors will definitely hear your barking dog - that you may not be able to untrain - is setting yourself up for real problems. It would result in ongoing stressful issues with the neighbors and the condo Board. I am certain that the neighbors won't tolerate it, they shouldn't have to.

If you bought the condo, you'll then be faced with one of two bad choices -- get rid of the dog or sell the condo. The first would likely result in emotional trauma and the second would be very costly. My advice? Don't set yourself up with a stressful and predictable problem.

Condo’s I have lived in have been well built with fire walls in between the units and you would be hard pressed to hear a dog bark in a unit unlike a hotel room. Then again it depends on the quality of the building.

Why not just say that instead of implying strange cross species, um, "romance".

It's a common expression, actually.

It’s not “romance” it’s a love for a pet in the family. My grand kitty lost his tail in a serious operation and since my daughter had a special event she had to attend far away, I got to nurse a cat I have never met, right after he got off his anesthesia. She brought him in the car from 2 hours away right after his operation. It was a fight for his life - and I fought every minute with him. Today he is fine and healthy and sparky and he is MY grand kitty!

Sorry you don't like granddogs, but this is what we call them.
