My Top Ten Yankees of all time

________________________________________
In today’s Long Island Newsday, there was an article about the best ten Yankees of all time. I agree with nine of them and even the order they were chosen.

Ruth, Joe D, Gehrig, Mantle, Yogi, Whitey, Mariano, Jeter and Bill Dickey seem like good choices. It is number ten that is my complaint. This prima donna will never be a true Yankee and although Ruth began his career with The Red Sox and Yogi finished his with the Mets, they will always be thought of as Yankees. AROD as talented as he is or was, will never fit the mode of a true Yankee. Reggie Jackson would have been a better choice, or Thurman or Rizzuto…Holy Cow.

Top Ten Yankees Plus Comments

1. Babe Ruth – he would have been a Hall of Fame pitcher in addition to being a Hall of Fame hitter. He held the record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched in a World Series until Whitey Ford broke it. He saved baseball from the Black Sox scandal.
2. Lou Gehrig for his RBI totals and 500 plus home runs in a career that was cut short.
3. Joe D – The most dominate player in his era.
4. Mantle – I wonder how much better he could have been if he had healthy knees.
5. Yogi – My favorite. The foul home run champion. I saw him take a golf swing at a ball almost on home plate and hit a home run.
6. Whitey Ford – I thought he would win every game he pitched. Nickname is “slick”.
7. Mariano – Minnesota manager Tom Kelly said something like he belongs in a higher league. The most dominate relief pitcher I’ve ever seen.
8. Jeter – A Class act.
9. Bill Dickey – Yogi said, “He learned me everything I know”. Before my time.
10. Phil Rizzuto – Yogi said Rizzuto was the main reason they won 5 consecutive World Series from 1949 to 1953.

The best pure hitter I saw was Ted Williams. I was sitting several rows back in the third deck and he came to bat in ninth inning. He hit a shot that I thought was coming to me. The ball wound up being several rows behind me.
What a sight to behold.

However, if I had to pick, I'd have to say Joe D. Granted, Mickey could have been a lot greater if he had played sober, but he didn't and the Babe played great even hungover. So, Joe DiMaggio has got to be it. But I'll still take Hank!

Hank Aaron, yes! I was so fortunate to see him hit #715 out of park at (the old) Turner Stadium in Atlanta on April 8, 1974. You cannot even imagine the sound or length of the roar that followed. It seemed to be at least a 20 minute standing O with 55,000+ of us on our feet, jumping and applauding and shouting for joy.

Aaron had actually received death threats for daring to threaten Ruth's home run record.

Yes, this happened in the Deep South in 1974. But I can tell you as an eye witness that there was nothing that day but joy in mudville. It was historic and touching and exciting at once; and being there was easily one of the top ten experiences of my life.

Not too many people can top that one, PT.

redwitch 12-30-2010 06:34 PM

Pt, I am sooooo jealous. To have seen that hit live would have been a dream come true.

As to Willie Mays, what can I say about the Say Hey Kid. He is a Giant of a man (and I so love that he and Hank have not hesitated to chastise the non-steroid my read end Barry Bonds!). I've had the privilege of seeing him quite a few times, but never enough. I don't think I've ever seen a player who loved the game more than he.

BTW -- my vote for the best fireman ever is the Quis. I'd never seen a submariner pitch before and became absolutely enthralled with it. He was the start of my love of the Royals. There were a few firemen who had better records, including Rollie Fingers and Goose Gossage (two faves of mine), but none with the style, finesse and humor of Dan Quisenberry. Sides, can't think of any that had season records as often as he did.

Man, I miss baseball. Tom, you're making me think I might have to try going to a game or two again to see if I can get the love back. Maybe spring training would be a good start.

chuckinca 12-31-2010 01:23 AM

Forget about going to see the Rays at Tropicana, baseball indoors just ain't right. Went to see the Phillies in Clearwater and had a great day; the city park right next to the Phillies park is named for Joe D. Spring training and minor league games are a lot of fun.

On the drive back to CA last May we stopped in Denver to visit our daughter and grandkids. Our son-in-law is on the Denver PD and sometimes works the baseball games; he got us tics and took us to a game and parked in the players lot. In about the 7th inning my wife got hit by a foul ball. We were sitting about 15 rows from the field near shallow left field, she caught the ball as it bounced off her chin - it had bounced around the fans and seats before it got to her. Ball park people were there in an instant and took her for a medical check up and had her sign an injury claim waiver.

Yes, Dan Q. was a great relief pitcher. The baseball Gods took him away too early. Guess they needed a closer they could depend on.

As far as the game of baseball goes, I was once its biggest fan. Free agency, arbitration, greed, agents and steroid use has turned my stomach. The game will never be what it was.

Slingbox is connected to my cable connector in CT via a splitter and has a LAN cable to my home network router.

Software on my PC here allows me to watch any program on my PC, that is on my cable up north. All Yankee games on YES, Francessa, channel 9, local CT news, etc. It has a software remote on the screen that I user to change channels just as if I was in my living room there.

I get all Giant games via the box also, all thru the internet at a low cost.

It has been a godsend, thanks to my loving wife who looks after my happiness!

It is a good solution for people who have a home there or have family with a home network they can use for connection.

Are you watching with your slinbox in HD? If so how good is it?
My son has FIOS in NY and would definitely have high enough uplod speed. Just curious to get feed back from users.

Mariano Rivera Injured

The greatest reliever in the history of baseball tore his ACL yesterday while shagging fly balls before the game started. It very well may mean the end of his career at his age. What a terrible thing for Mariano and for Yankee fans. I cannot put into words what he has meant to the team for the past 15 years.

Not only the greatest reliever but a class act. One of the greatest Yankees of all time. He will be mentioned in the same sentence as Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio, Yogi and Jeter. He will be missed not only between the lines but in the clubhouse as well.

bandsdavis 05-04-2012 07:58 AM

Even us die hard Sox fans are saddened by this. Rivera is a tremendous player and an even better representative for baseball. As the Boston Globe said today "he transcends the rivalry" and is well respected among Sox fans and fans everywhere. Hope he can come back and pitch again.

:agree: He always conducted himself with class, win or lose.

Bobcuse 05-04-2012 08:23 AM

He will be back. His faith, pride and determination will allow him to recover and then retire after notching a few more saves for his beloved Yankees. In no way do I see him wanting to hang it up and have this photo of him writhing in pain in the outfield be his last act as a Yankee. He will return and subsequently exit on his own terms with class and dignity.

tpop1 05-04-2012 10:09 AM

Sad...

Very sad day in Yankee land and MLB.

Just heard him on the radio and there was a great sadness in his voice.

With him planning to retire at the end of the year, rehab might not be as accelerated as us fans wished.

I hope he comes back and relieves in one game this year before retiring as I think he wants.

Then make your reservations for the last weekend of July 2018 in Cooperstown NY.

Who can forget Yogi

Lawrence Peter Berra played Major League Baseball for 19 years for the New York Yankees.
He played on 10 World Series Championship teams, is a MLB Hall of Famer and has some awe-inspiring stats.
His name is consistently brought up as one of the best catchers in baseball history, and he was voted to the Team of the Century in 1999.
Amazing accomplishments aside, they probably aren't how you know Lawrence.
You know him as Yogi, a nickname given to him by a friend who likened his cross-legged sitting to a yogi.
Yogi is famous for his fractured English, malapropisms and sometimes nonsensical quotes.
He's closing in on 86, and there seems to be no end to his fan's love for him.
Here are 25 Yogi Berra quotes that will make you shake your head and smile.

1. "It's like deja vu all over again."
2. "We made too many wrong mistakes."
3. "You can observe a lot just by watching."
4. "A nickel ain't worth a dime anymore."
5. "He hits from both sides of the plate. He's amphibious."

6. "If the world was perfect, it wouldn't be."
7. "If you don't know where you're going, you might end up some place else."
8. Responding to a question about remarks attributed to him that he did not think were his:
"I really didn't say everything I said."
9. "The future ain't what it use to be."
10. "I think Little League is wonderful. It keeps the kids out of the house."

11. On why he no longer went to Ruggeri's, a St. Louis restaurant:
"Nobody goes there anymore because it's too crowded."
12. "I always thought that record would stand until it was broken."
13. "We have deep depth."
14. "All pitchers are liars or crybabies."
15. When giving directions to Joe Garagiola to his New Jersey home, which is accessible by two routes:
"When you come to a fork in the road, take it."

16. "Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours."
17. "Never answer anonymous letters."
18. On being the guest of honor at an awards banquet:
"Thank you for making this day necessary."
19. "The towels were so thick there I could hardly close my suitcase."
20. "Half the lies they tell about me aren't true."

21. As a general comment on baseball: "90% of the game is half mental."
22. "I don't know (if they were men or women running naked across the field).
They had bags over their heads."
23. "It gets late early out there."
24. Carmen Berra, Yogi's wife asked: "Yogi, you are from St. Louis, we live in New Jersey, and you played ball in New York. If you go before I do, where would you like me to have you buried?" Yogi's answer: "Surprise me."
25. "It ain't over till it's over."

Good post !

My favorite Yogiism has always been:

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

Tom Hannon 08-04-2012 06:51 PM

You forgot one of Yogi's best quotes when he said "I didn't say half the things I said." But of course, his most famous quote is number 25. "It ain't over till its over". Yogi still insists that Jackie Robinson was out on his steal of home in the 1955 World Series. Number 8 was a great one. I know his days are numbered but he was a great one and one of the most popular players of all time.

George Bieniaszek 08-04-2012 06:56 PM

I wish I had the answer, cause I am tired of answering the question.

If people do not want to come out to the ball park, no one is going to stop them.

It gets late early around here.

You should always go to your friends funerals, otherwise, they won't come to yours.

You should come to the meeting of The Villages NY Yankees Club. It is the 4th Monday of every month at Allemanda rec center. However, they are not meeting this month. Next meeting will be 9/25 at 7PM. Their website is http://yanksintv.yolasite.com if you want to check them out.

Swisher's contract is up at the end of 2012, I believe. Do the Yanks try to resign him, or let him walk? He'll be expensive ...........

I think this Ichiro fella can play a little right field.

I know, but I just love his hustle.
Looks like he really enjoys playing and always giving 100 %.

I also hope they keep him. Then, there's gonna be Grandy and Cano to deal with. Hope they can keep all 3 of them.

Wish A-Rod would agree to re-negotiate. He sucks up a lot of $$.

Tom Hannon 08-17-2012 07:27 AM

Andrew Jones is a DH only. It is hard to believe how bad he is as a fielder now. A once good glove outfielder should never wear a glove again. Play Ichiro full time in left...between both lefties and nighties. or occasionally play Ibanez in left. As far as Swisher goes, I like him but the Yankees can't afford to sign Cano and Granderson and have enough payroll to pay Swisher as well. I would also like Ichiro to hang around next year but at what price. Will he settle for a contract for 3 million? I doubt it.

2BNTV 08-17-2012 07:45 AM

I would like to commend Brian Cashman for the trades he made and didn't make. Getting rid of Burnett and getting Ibanez, Jones and keeping Eric Chavez, (what a year he's having). Getting Ichiro and Derek Lowe.

The Yankees are playing good baseball with these role players. Hopefully, we will get Pettite and Rodriguez back in time for the playoffs. A healthy CC will sure go a long way. I am impressed by the way Kuroda has pitched.

GO YANKEES!!!!

ugotme 08-17-2012 07:45 PM

And, I must admit, I have basically never liked this guy - Hughes has pitched fairly well.
Wanted him traded.

Pitching staff SHOULD be okay for playoffs (I hope, I hope). Wish #42 could return !

coralway 08-17-2012 09:05 PM

Well, Phil got the win tonight. 7IP, 0 ER - admittedly against a weak Red Sox club.

DON'T CARE LOL ! A win is a win.

The other guy I finally thought of whom I was glad to see go (and is now pitching well) was A J Burnett!

Some guys just can't pitch in NY. they leave and become stars. Oh well.

This is very true. Some people can't play in N.Y.

I am interested in how David Phelp's does in his second start for CC.

Pitching against a NL club is not quite the same as pitching an AL club.

I think it is as there are 41 more games to play.. They have to play the Rays and Orioles six or seven times before the season has ended. That will have a bearing on the standings but I am confident the Yankees will play well against them. The Rays are a hot team at the moment that is deep in pitching and got Langoria back in the line-up.

I still think the Yankees will win especially if they get A-Rod and Pettite back healthy. We need them for the playoffs.

BTW - How about the job the guys are doing at third base for A-Rod.

Hopefully, Mark Texiera's wrist will stay healthy. He's going back into the line-up tonight.
