Default Comcast Economy internet service

Is anybody using this "slower", less expensive package from Comcast?
At less than half the speed is it acceptable for email, browsing?
Will it handle you tube like video clips?

I am trying to par programming costs from Comcast to be more in line with what we actually USE.

If all you use the internet for is email and light web browsing and some youtube videos you probably would be fine. If you are going to do video streaming like Netflix you will need more bandwith. Also your wireless router makes a difference as far as speed goes. Some people get high speed service like 30 or 60 mbs but have an old wireless router or an older computer and neither can take advantage of the high speed service. I say try it out... you can always up-grade at no additional cost.

Could you do me a favor? Please run the speed test from Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test

and post your two numbers. I'd like to compare them to mine to make sure my router isn't slowing me down.

Thanks,
JR

I have a 10-meg connection with CenturyLink, and the speedtest shows it is genuinely 10-meg, but real-world access to webpages is slower than my 1.5-meg connection at home.

Tricky to know how things will pan out until you actually try it so, as suggested above, probably worth signing up and upgrading if necessary

Since I have the same service but not the same results (around 20 down - 5 up) could you share what type of router and modem you are using? Thanks.

your numbers seem to be in the category of Comcast's Performance package.

The Blast which is the top one has numbers double those of Performance.

I'm using a Comcast supplied Technicolor TC8305C.
I need to replace this and buy my own since they charge $8/mo for it.

Is the Blast offered by Comcast or a competitor?

Back to your original question. I use the lowest category basic internet service from Comcast. I do video streaming from Amazon Prime and Hulu plus, video conferences and voice on Skype, and tons of email and web searches. It's not fast but it works.

Be cautious of getting Comcast help once you have something working; it is very hard to find competent support in that company.

I have/had the lowest rate internet from Comcast. 5 MBps, typically speed tested to 3.5. With Comcast the rate is inversely proportional to the number of users. I used this to stream movies with minor annoyances. I just switched to Centurylink for a dedicated 10 Mbps. Speeds tests to 9.8-9.9 every time.

My only problem is getting through to the terrible customer service to confirm my service was disconnected. Every other company in the world will send you an email to confirm changes to your account except Comcast. No email, no indication on the web page that anything ever changed. When I called three days later because my new bill for the next month was processing and I owed another month, they told me not to worry, it will adjust next week. I asked for an email to state what I was told and was transferred to a busy signal and a big click goodbye. Can't wait to be done with Comcast.

Don't even ask about my customer experience trying to recover 10 months of "rental" modem charges that they randomly started to collect after 2 years of "customer owned modem" billing. I recovered one $7 charge and gave up on the rest of the money after 4 calls and over 2 hours of wasted time talking to them.
