I use Avast on my WinXP with SP3. Can't be specific as to when I began using it but the time period is "years". Haven't had any problems (knock, knock) with either Avast or any virus that it didn't catch.

DDoug, We have Both the Free Avast & Free AVG for all our computers. By far Avast is the better. Continually letting us know virus present in links/programs, blocking & preventing them from getting into our system. We also use Free Ad-Ware from Lavasoft.

I've been using the free version for 4 years now and love it. Have never had a problem with it and it has caught a few virus.

Yes, Avast is very good, highly recommended as it was installed by repair tech when had my laptop in for service.
Was told by the service peeps that Microsoft Security Essentials is not compatible with AOL. Since the change; all is well.

I use Norton 360. It works great. Prior to using Norton 360 my wifes computer got hijacked (facebook of course) and she couldn't open anything. I Installed norton 360 and it cured the problem. Before that we were using McAfee but not anymore.

Avast caught and fixed numerous bugs the first time I used it last year. I'm sold....on the free version!

![]() There are a variety of anti-virus programs that some are rated better than others. You can google their ratings. I use Microsoft Security Essentials, (free version), and I use Malwarebytes, (free version), and I have had no problems for a year. I previously had McAfee and I don't see a difference in my computers protection. If you use these programs, remember to run a scan once a week to ensure your PC's safety. The quick scan option only takes a couple of minutes. I had noticed that if one fails to do the scan every week, the MS Essentials goes from green to amber and it gives a warning that your PC can potentially be unprotected. Both programs are easy to dowload and use.

Not much of an attraction when you only have about 10% of the computers in use.

You DO need anti-virus because of compromised websites. If you go to a website that has been hacked or is display flash-based ads that have malicious scripts in them, you DO need anti-virus. I've worked as a computer programmer and software architect for nearly 36 years and the "I use Apple and don't need to protect myself" is one of the top 5 computer myths out there. The thieves have take notice of this and since Apple is so much more popular than it used to be, it IS getting targeted for malware. Recently Apple didn't want to admit that there was a security flaw for a particular virus until thousands of people complained. Apple finally "did the right thing" and got a fix out there for it but the bottom line is that Apple is NOT immune. The more people that buy Apples, the more they'll be the target of the scammers. That's why it was all Windows-based stuff earlier - like Willie Sutton said "That's where the money was".
