I have an HP/Compaq Presario CQ50 laptop. This is my 1st computer. It says I need a new battery. The reviews for the HP replacement are abysmal. I "Googled" "battery replacement" and clicked on a site called Technology 8 or something like that. Found a battery for half the price, says the cell is made by Sanyo. Can I trust a non-OEM battery? I rarely use my laptop on battery power, only to walk to Mom's room to show her something. This one has lasted since Dec 2010. Thanks in advance.

I've used non-OEM batteries in my laptops for years. Quality is variable. Some have lasted at least as long as the originals, while others less. It seems to depend on how old the cells are. At one point I bought OEM batteries from other sources, but they may have been overstock and old. Some of those only lasted a couple of months. So, I've generally gone on eBay and bought mine. If they die, I haven't spent a lot. I've not experienced any problems with my laptops with non-OEM batteries, either.

Thanks guys! I feel more comfortable buying a non-OEM battery & at half the cost my wallet won't take such a hit.

Just be sure whatever battery you buy is FRESH (newly made not 'new old stock'). Batteries can go bad from age just as well as from usage.

I paid half as much as the manufacturers asking price for a battery with 30% larger capacity. Go for it and don't get rid of the old one - let it go completely out of charge and then charge it if at all possible - than store it and periodically switchout the new and old batteries about every other month.

A quick check on Amazon indicates a replacement battery. Prices range from $21-$27. Original is $50.I'd trust an non OEM. I use them all the time with other electronic devices including my wife's laptop. |

I save time by going to Amazon.com and entering my computer name followed by battery. Amazon does all the work I just pick the best deal. It works for me and my friends every time.
