Default Slow speed on laptops

For the past few days the loading speed on both my Apple laptop and Windows laptop has been super slow. Is anyone else having a problem? My internet is provided by Xfinity. Is there a way to tell what the current internet speed is vs what it should be. Follow-on question..how do I find what the speed should be.??? As you can tell, my computer knowledge is quite limited.

Thanks for any help.

Your Xfinity bill will tell you what plan you are on and the plan should tell you what speed to expect.

You can use the site: Speedtest.net to determine what kind of speed you are getting to your devices. Run it from each of your laptops. On your cell phone, turn off your mobile service (might be airplane mode, might be a separate button) then run Speedtest from that too (don't forget to turn mobile back on).

- If all three match your Xfinity plan then you're good
- If all three are similar but significantly less than your plan then suspect your Xfinity equipment
- If one is slower than the others then the problem is on that device

If it looks like you have a problem you might try rebooting your Xfinity router.

For the most accurate speed test you should be hard-wired into your router, rather than wireless. If you don't want to fuss with that, at least make sure that your laptop is close to (and line of sight with) the router, and that no other devices are using it at the same time as you are running the speed test.

The point of using speed tests is to identify a problem with whatever method of connection you are currently using.

If there's a downward trend of speed, then the user has to identify why, or at least, where the trend originates. They can't do that if they just plug each device directly into the router, or change the device's location.

You run speedtest.net from your device, in the location you usually use it. If you normally connect wirelessly, then test it that way. If you normally connect it with a physical cable plugged directly into the router, test it that way.

Your speed will be slower with a wifi connection than if connected physically to the router, that's expected.

But if you have (for example) a 1GB Xfinity plan, and a desktop, laptop, printer, and TV all sharing the router - but the TV is connected with a cable to that router....

THEN you will see that the TV's speed is significantly faster than the other devices. It might be as fast as 900MBPS. Your desktop, in the same room as the router but on the other side of the room, might be only 700mbps. The laptop in the guest room might be at 550mbps. You can't test your printer, but just accept that it doesn't need a lot of wifi speed anyway and is very likely slower than the other devices in the house.

Just sign onto you Xfinity account and run the Speed Check. It will tell you what you're getting for speed & what speed you're paying for.

True, but if you start with the best possible connection (wired) and the test shows that you are getting what you have signed up for, then you can rule out the ISP as being the problem.

You won't get what you signed up for. You'll get less, almost always. You aren't guaranteed 1gb, when you sign up for the 1gb plan. You are guaranteed UP TO 1gb. Meaning - it's likely you will get less, and it is unlikely you'll ever go over.

Xfinity utilizes a shared network. During busy times, everyone on the network will see slower speeds. The network extends all the way to the CO (a tiny building that looks like a boarded-up 1-bedroom house). So sure - maybe at 3:25AM you'll see the speed you signed up for. Maybe. It's not guaranteed though.

I've confirmed there is a padded cell full of techno nerds. A message goes out. He has everything working. Time to put in a change. It is a system. No matter how fast your connection is it can't be faster than the device that is connected. "Is anyone having a problem?" Reread above.

There is a difference between wireless and direct connect to a modem. Wireless is always less.

Not always true; wireless can be less but isn't always less.

Some things that can limit wifi speeds:
- not all wifi protocols support speeds above 400Mbps
- the farther you are from the router, the more likely you are to lose some speed, especially if the signal needs to go through a wall
- the wifi hardware in the router may not support its full rate
- the wifi hardware in the computer may not support the full rate
- an older computer might not have the processor power to support the full rate

I had to call Xfinity because of running slow and tv buffering. The customer service agent checked and tested and came back and said there was nothing wrong but after hanging up with him no more problems. Also download their app and you can check the speeds there.

Wireless will always be less than direct, never more, physically can’t be higher.

If you want to test your speed, never, I mean never test the speed using wireless, always use an Ethernet connection from your laptop to the router and do an Ookla speed test to see what kind of speed you can expect from your ISP.
Most issues in speed come from your wireless network because most people will use only 1 router and the further you go from the router, go behind a wall, your performance drops off significantly.
Xfinity, spectrum, or any ISP will never claim your wireless network will Match the speed you are paying for.
I use 5 routers (not including the xfinity router) in my designer home and I can go anywhere in or out of my house to get 800-900Mb speeds. Since my house is totally automated, I need the performance and coverage.

If you aren’t getting 85% of the speed you are paying for with a direct connection (850Mb for a 1G plan), call your ISP to see what is going on. They can trace your connection. BTW: if you are running an older pc with only a 10baseT/100 base-t network, you will only get 10Mb/100Mb speeds which is fine if you only buy a 100Mb plan but if you buy any plan with more than 100Mbps, you are wasting your money
