I have century link as my provider and use their virus protection. Their
virus program pick up a trojan virus but were not able to remove it.
I called them and said some viruses can get through and they want
$14.95 additional a month to have a tech clean it from my system.
Is this customary also is there a better way. I should add I did
restore my system to a previous date and the virus message did
not reappear. Not sure where I am on this.

Look at Comcast Cable. We have their internet and Norton security. Knock on wood it as been working well to protect us. They also have phone and TV service, but we use Dish Network and only our cell phones. Good luck.

If you restored to a previous date and don't have the virus message, I'd say you have it fixed...

Th virus protection on your system is not very robust. It detected the virus after it was on the system but not when the initial infection occurred? You may want to upgrade to AVG or a similar program that has a more sophisticated virus scan.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a free download and is very good....just go to the Microsoft web site

I would not pay the monthly fee. Probably will not do you any good. The suggestion to do a restore might help.
I would also look for free virus software and run it. Try Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It is free for personnel use.

You might be able to search the internet for your virus and find a program that will fix it. You should be able to find a description of what the trojan does and you may decide that you do not have to fix it. Also look at Microsoft's site for help. They have individual programs for some bad viruses.
Problem with searching the internet is you could get bad software so I would only download from site that you know or get references too.

Both are free downloads. Just Google them and download.You should run these programs once per week to ensure proptection.

I have been using them for two years with no problems.

I went to Cnet to find out what software they had reviewed and decided
on Avasti which I downloaded and so far it has done the job. It also has
a free trial period. It is a wake up call to me that so many viruses out
there that it may take more than one program to find detect them.

The only way to go. NEVER pay your cable provider a monthly fee for something you can get for free.

One word about Norton and that is it "may" cause problems when you try to upgrade other software on your computer. I have seen this may times when Norton blocked downloading program updates from the software companies site saying it was infected and it was not. A false positive in Norton's software.

Microsoft Security Essentials is fantastic, free, easy to use, and it will automatically scan your computer at a set tie, the default time is Sunday night at 2:30 AM.

I totally agree...go to CNET...the links are there. Beware of Norton as it is a systems hog as is McAfee.
