You need to subscribe to an internet service for your home. You can do this through Comcast or another vendor. Then you need to buy a router that inclues wifi. You should also be able to get the router from the intenet supplier. Routers are inexpensive so I would not rent one from Comcast but buy one that works with your internet suppliers system.

If you have more thumbs than fingers, and technology hates you...you can always head for Best Buy and let their Geek Squad handle everything.
Pricey, but a lot less aggravation.

True enough. Wireless routers are very inexpensive (I bought one two years ago for $35 and it has never given me a problem), and now have great range and speed compared to just a few years back. They are also VERY easy to setup now, out of the box, so I'd try to do it yourself before you over-pay to have the Geek squad come out. Even for a novice, most can be setup and running in about 20 minutes with no technical ability.

just a note - use of a personal router instead of the rented one from yout internet provider most likely means that your provider will not service problems you might have because of the router - or there might be a big fat fee for doing so.

also read recently the the new modems comcast is using has a built-in router - so ask before you do anything else.

I bought a modem with a router built in at Best Buy of about $100.

Just make sure that you set up the security on the WiFi to allow only your usage or the entire neighborhood will be using your internet connection.

The original post was from March 2012. Hopefully elevatorman has his connection up and running by now.
