I have a frame house and I want to install a window in the outside wall of the garage. Is this a DIY project? Can you recomend a contractor?

You should stick with a licensed contractor familiar with ARC requirements, and hurricane framing/fastening requirements.

On a scale of 1-10 adding a window is a 5,

You need to remove the sheetrock, install a header and jacks, cut thru the outside sheathing and vinyl etc.

Pop in the window, a window cost about $100-$200 other supplies $50.

Time is about 5 hours for a DIY,

If you pay someone base it on less man hours.

I have a window in my garage. Did not do the trick for me. Added a row of windows on the garage door. Big improvement.

I agree - we have a garage window and it doesn't really allow much light. I think replacing windows in a row of your garage door would do much more if you're looking for light.

I already have windows across the top of the door. I want to add one in the wall that I can open for air flow. I agree that this should be done by a licensed contractor. Can you recommend someone?

Not to hijak this thread, but......although window air conditioners are not allowed, are window exhaust fans allowed?

Why not just install a fan thru the ceiling into a duct (not to blow in the Attic) thru the roof, I don't think you need any approval for that.

Might be a good idea. Aside from the permitting issue, it may be more than I want to spend right now. I'll have to get some estimates. A window fan could help on a temporary basis.

if you want airflow, contact the solar guys about a gf-14 fan they install in the ceiling.
It works GREAT. Total cost was about $500. Plus you don't have to leave your window open (security).
