I'm thinking of taking on a Broward Factory Service contract. Has anyone done business with them,good or bad..Or does anyone recommend another service contract company that covers all appliances and a/c??

So is there any reason to take out a 5 year extended warranty with new kitchen Aid appliances? or whirlpool appliances?

When you're buying a car, a home or an appliance, more than likely you'll be pressured to buy a service contract, or "extended warranty," as part of the purchase. The warranty, you'll be told, covers repairs not covered by the manufacturer's warranty, or will extend coverage after the manufacturer's warranty expires.

But is this really true?

Are extended warranties a good buy? Companies selling them insist that they are, claiming they save consumers hundreds, even thousands, of dollars in costly repairs. But consumers filing complaints with ConsumerAffairs.com tell a different story.

Judging from the seemingly countless complaints we've received, there are five good reasons why consumers shouldn't buy the extended warranty.

1. They Usually Cost More Than They're Worth
2. Warranty Work May Be Unreliable
3. The Warranty May Not Cover What You Think It Does
4. Warranty Underwriter May Go Out Of Business
5. The Extended Warranty May Overlap Manufacturer's Warranty

Those are service company's contracts that you referred to above. What do you think of the manufacturer extended warranty contracts?

Re: your question -

IMHO - - - I feel that the cost/benefit doesn't really play out in most cases. If you're going to buy one, though, you're probably in better hands with one from the manufacturer as opposed to having one from a third-party independent of the manufacturer. I'd think the manufacturer would be a more stable entity - better chance of them being around during the warranty period.

But it's like any other kind of insurance, it's a complete and utter waste of money.............until you would need it. Then if you have it, you're tickled pink and feel it was well worth the money you paid for it. If you don't have it, then you're probably not a happy camper.

We've never bought an extended warranty on anything........though a couple of years ago, it would've been kinda nice to have had one on our Maytag washer - it chucked the main circuit board less than a year after the factory warranty expired. But in the mix of things, I diagnosed and replaced it myself......for less than the cost of what the extended warranty would've been. Wouldn't have balanced out that way, though, had I called a service company to come and fix it.

We have a Broward contract. When we had a problem with our AC they were at our home in 15 minutes and fixed the problem. But I do agree with Bill that you must weigh the pros and cons and decide what is best for you.
