Default A/C went out

Did a search and read all the posts regarding our disfunctional Trane units. Also searched the web on evapoator coils. Seems replacing A-coils is a common rip-off in the repair industry. I know many of us had leaky coils replaced for major bucks.

Hopefully, I'll find out tomorrow what my problem is. Any bets it's the coil?

Default extended warranty

We have a Trane (4 yrs old) and bought a 12 yr extended warranty thru SunKool - it's actually thru an extended warranty co. they use. Cost us $950, but has almost paid for itself in only 3 years and has about 9 years to go.

They have not charged us for parts or labor - last problem was this past April when the evaporator coil outside had to be replaced. Had another problem in the garage unit with another kind of coil (?), can't remember details, and 2 other minor problems. We also have the yearly SunKool club (another yearly charge) where they come out and service twice yearly.

Normally I never get these extended warranties, but the a/c has to work really hard in Florida. It especially has been peace of mind as we don't live there yet and have been renting it out.

My friend who bought a model closeout a year ago, has a Carrier, and just had a major problem that I think was covered by the original warranty.

If this unit makes it thru the warranty period, and we are still alive and kicking in TV, we'll buy the best rated hvac system, or at least a/c (we have gas heat) unit. I also understand thru my friend that there's a co. out there that will sell you a combined extended warranty on appliances and hvac system, but I think it has to be new, and to get new all at once normally means you have to have bought new construction.

Chuck Farrell came out this morning. Turns out it was a 5 amp fuse blown in the air handler. Fuses and capacitors can blow with our lightning storms and elec. surges. He replaced the fuse, gave me a spare, and checked the wiring inside and out. Told him my GFCI in the garage keeps tripping, then will reset after 2 days or so. He said to check the silicone caulking around the outside outlets that are on the same circuit. I'm going to recaulk them all. These wicked rains cause ground faults.

This man is worth his weight in gold. I called five other companies and they all wanted $74 - $120 just to come out. Chuck showed up first and I was charged $65.

I can recall a number of threads over the last three or four years that all start with someone's request for a recommendation for repairing their AC or furnace. The threads always end with several people raving about Chuck Farrell. I took the suggestion and have had Chuck repair my unit a couple of times. He is THE BEST!

I think it would be terrific if there was a way we could have our own TOTV "Consumer Reports" forum which collected the best contractors and service providers. There are probably a few reasons why it would be hard to do, but it sure would be a great contribution. Besides Chuck Farrell, my other "Bests" would be T&D Concrete (specifically Randy Martin), Jack's Solar, The Solar Guys and Chase Frye Home Maintenance.

This is a GREAT IDEA!! What do you think Mr. Talk Host??

Some of the contractors monitor TOTV and there have been repercussions if someone leaves a bad review which is recognizable by the contractor.

There must be a way to do this -- maybe similar to the poll function on this site. We could rate contractors, all anonymously. Something like "1" for bad and "5" for best.

My a/c died yesterday, fan working but no cold air. So at 10 of 5, I call Munn's - I bought the extended warantee from them 3 years ago.

The woman on the phone says "We'll have somebody out today." and my wife and I sit down for supper.

10 after 5, I look out the front window and there's the Munn's truck. I go out, can't find the guy so I look around. He's at the outside unit and has already replaced the motor. We turn on the system, it blows cold air, he waits for a bit, tops off the 'freon', and we're all set.

And no charge. Darn good service, I'm a happy camper.

Congrats! Nothing like getting value for your money! Mind if we ask what the warranty cost, for what period of time and if there are any exclusions?
Thanx.

As I recall, it was something like 250 bucks for 4 years? Not sure but that's close.

And it looks like everything is covered - including the stuff that takes the place of freon.

btw, the reason I took out the extended warantee is that it seemed that every neighbor had to replace some expensive thing or other on their a/c.

Slightly off track but...

I know that TV started using Carrier instead of Trane a few years ago due to multiple repair issues. Is anyone have trouble with the new units?
