Default Remodeling a small CYV master bath

Has anyone done a total remake of a CYV master bath? We have an older model with sort of a square MB. My goal is to create a shower with a built-in seat. I think there is room but I'm not totally sure. Any suggestions for a design person or contractor or help of any kind? My darling husband is no help since he won't stop shaking his head and rolling his eyes. (Why would I want to do this he asks. Because I do!)

Buy the software for your PC to do the design yourself. I got one at Costco for about $30. Measure the room as though it was bare walls, then draw that with the software, then you can drag and drop things like showers, vanities, toilet etc until you have everything just the way you want. Or use the software to draw in custom sizes if necessary. Then hire your contractor to build it. My software was called "IMSI TurboFloorPlan" and it worked very well. But there are several other products out there, even some freeware that I would think would be able to do a bathroom. I used it to do a total house remodel plan and it worked very well.

I've already sketched it out on graph paper (I know, low tech!) but I still have questions. For example, how much room do I absolutely need to allow for the toilet? How wide must a shower door be? If I don't want to use a prefab shower base and just tile the floor instead, will it drain ok? So, questions ... Can most contractors answer things like that? And what type of a contractor? a plumber? a tiler?

This might be a place to start and get some ideas. There are even articles on the site about who to hire and what to ask etc. Hope it helps.

Minimum width for a toilet is 24 inches, 30 is better. Yes you can tile the floor and it will drain fine. They use a rubber membrane to form the shower stall floor and and can custom fit it to any size you want. Then put a concrete/grout like mix over it, then tile. My master bath here in VA has a shower that is built on an angle wall and is like 3 feet wide at one end, 6 feet long on one side and 4 feet long on the other. The door is actually in the angle space. The shower pan was custom made right in that odd shape using the thick rubber membrane

As for shower doors, they come standard 24, 28, 32 and 36 inches, but again custom glass can make them any size you need. As an example for the shower above, the door is 31.5 inches wide. Wouldn't go much less then 28 inches for comfort reasons. Just have them build it any shape that fits your space, call a glass company and they will build the shower glass walls and door any size/shape required. It really is not that expensive to do it that way.

Keep in mind that you may want to get a wheel chair in the space. Thus I would lean toward wider doors if possible.

Hm-m-m. Hadn't thought about a wheelchair. How much space do you need to allow for that? I've got 30" for the toilet, but only 24" for the shower door. That is what ours is in our master at home and I've never thought anything about it feeling small.

Another question is about the trade-off between counter space and a double vanity. We would have just enough room for 2 sinks but have little counter space. When both of us are getting ready for work at the same time, 2 sinks are wonderful. So I can't make up my mind about that decision.

Then finally, would I hire each type of workman separately (e.g. plumber, tiler, carpenter, etc) or is there such an animal as a bath re-modeler? If so, any names?

(BTW, l2r, you never cease to amaze me with all the stuff you know about! Guess riding around on that Harley isn't just wasted time.)

Another trade-off may also be the number of pull-out drawers. With double sinks, you may only have enough room for 3 drawers between the sinks. With a single sink, you may be able to have a set of 3 drawers on both sides of the sink (total of 6 drawers).

Hello Linda,

I accidently ran across your email from last year....I know why you wanted to do that to the mb...I hope you already have and can give me recommendations as I am in the same frame of mind as you...I love my CYV but the master bath is pitifully small. If you could give me any recommendations....I would so appreciate.

Thanks...a very happy relatively new Villager.

Yes, we did it and it is wonderful! Ty Duncan of Duncan Stone did it based on my design. Our neighbors have come trooping in to see it as word has spread! Everyone loves it. I've had a hard time taking pictures because the glass shower enclosure reflects everything so it is hard to see. I'd love to have you come take a peek. We are back north now, but will be back for a day or so in August and for a week or so in October. Contact me then and we can set up a viewing.
