Default Need To Get Tire Pressure Checked on Rental Car

Tonight while coming back to the house I'm renting, the low tire pressure sensor light came on the 2013 Ford Focus rental car. As this is a rental car, there is no tire pressure gauge in the car, so I don't know which tire is low. Of course this sensor light came on around 9:00 p.m., and it was dark outside so I can't visually tell which tire may be getting low.

I checked TOTV for tire repair recommendations. Sumter Tire & Auto in Wildwood was mentioned by a couple of people. I can go there, but was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a tire repair place closer to the historical side of TV as that is where I am renting. Thanks in advance.

I would either call the rental car company or take it to the Circle K and fill all the tires to the correct pressure. It'll cost you a buck. You'll probably save more than that in gas mileage.

The rental agency should take care of it. It's just a question of if you want to go through the hassle.

ANY Wal-Mart service shop would be glad to do it for free.

From Boone/ Morse Gates ( hospital area)
Just ONE_MILE NORTH on US 441/27 6 am to 7 pm everyday.
352-307-4415 BEHIND their Lawn and Garden.
(Across from a McDonalds and just north of Lowes and Aldi.

....OR....Out West on CR 466 to just before RRTracks - Almost US-301.
..it is Across from Murphy Gas Station.
352-259-2518
SUNDAY 9 to 6 .... other days 7 to 7 ....

Might be because it is only 72. degrees now.....
..and... were probably topped up when it was 90. degrees.

Thanks for the info. about Wal-Mart. I called Thrifty Car Rental's roadside assistance number, and the person on the phone said the drop in temp. may be causing the sensor light to come on. If the sensor light is still on tomorrow morning, I will take it to the Wal-Mart on 441/27 to have them check the tire pressure.

Thank you for the suggestion. I could buy a tire pressure gauge. I am embarrassed to admit this, but I'm not sure I would know how to read a tire pressure gauge to determine if the pressure is low or not.

I would guess that one of the tires has a slow leak. I believe the low-pressure light comes on when the tire pressure is 25% below the recommended tire pressure. This is typically not going to happen around here from temperature changes as 10 degrees of temperature change typically results in a 1 PSI pressure change. In other words, a couple of PSI change from temperature variations isn't enough to trigger the low pressure light unless the tire has a leak and is therefor not near the recommended pressure. I don't know how long you are planning on keeping the rental car but I would suggest the following: have the tire pressures set to the recommended values and if the tire pressure light comes on again call Thrifty and ask for a replacement rental car.

Default Took rental car to Walmart this morning

I followed mrfixit's suggestion, and I took the rental car to Walmart this morning. Repair tech. checked all four tires, and found the pressure to be fine on all of them. He said it must have been a faulty sensor. The sensor light has not come on since taking it to Walmart, so I am keeping my fingers crossed as I will have this rental car for another 9 days.

Changes in temp will affect the tire pressure and the sensor will go off. The manual will tell you how to reset it. On our honda there is a button you push for a few seconds after your turn the ignition key on to assessories.

Does it have a spare tire? The low pressure light came on with one of my cars when the spare was low. I kept resetting it and it kept coming back on after I checked the four tires I was using. Then I checked the spare and it was low. The light stayed off.

IMHO if you can't check the coolant, oil, tire pressure, and change a flat, you shouldn't be driving.

A lot of elderly people and small women may not have the upper body strength required to wrestle a spare time out of the trunk. So, you are saying they shouldn't be driving? While my wife is capable of changing a spare I would really prefer that she call AAA or me as I don't want her doing what is essentially a dangerous task. A lot of people really have little in the way of mechanical aptitude and are best letting service centers check fluid levels. So, those people shouldn't be driving either?

I can check the coolant and oil. Change a flat -- that is what I pay AAA Motor Club for; fortunately that has only happened to me two or three times in the years I have been driving. And I have been driving since 1977.
