Default New Publix opening.

Saw a sign a few days ago where the Albertson's used to be and near the Blockbuster at 1568 Bella Cruz Avenue, that the new Publix next to the Blockbuster will open on Thursday, November 13, 2008.

Question

Just what we needed, another Publix within a mile of the one at SS. I noticed Winn Dixie is trying spruce up and to get the seafood dept. going similar to Albertsons, thank goodness. Publix lacks in the seafood dept, IMHO. Winn Dixie has the best priced meats, also just my opinion. The steaks have been great! Publix, great bakery and more choices in frozen. I don't understand why Publix bought Albertsons, except maybe they do not want competition so close? I used to go to all 3 markets. Now only 2. Soon a monopoly and only 1?

Publix bought out all of the floundering Albertsons stores, not just the one here.

Default Sweetbay

Is Sweetbay a full fledged grocery store?

Yes, The company is headquartered in Tampa and is owned by the international supermarket giant, Belgium-based Delhaize Group. They are modeled after their sister Hannaford chain which is prominent in New England. That is why the credit card problems of Hannafords last year also included Sweetbay since their data processing operations are one in the same.

Cool

I too miss the seafood from Albertson's. they had an especially good meat and seafood department which made it worth the trip. Publix doesn't compare in that area. We will have to try Fresh Market soon and compare the seafood.

From the Albertsons LLC Store Locator on their official web-site, there are about 48 or so Albertsons within a long day's drive of Orlando.

I found about another 40 Albertsons in Colorado, but there not that many others listed after I tried some of the other major US cities like Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, etc.

There seem to be a lot of Albertsons still in the State of Texas as well as in the State of Arizona.

Wikipedia on Albertson's:

Albertsons is a brand name currently used by two separate companies due to the 2006 split of Albertsons, Inc.:

New Albertsons, Inc., a subsidiary of Supervalu and the owner of the Albertsons brand, operating in Washington state, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, California, and Utah.

Albertsons LLC, a privately-owned company licensing the "Albertsons" brand from Supervalu, operating in the Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Florida.

"Since their buyout, Albertsons' has been taken to court many times. Their turnover rate for employees has grown out of control, and their operations are methods of the past. Consumers of Albertsons realize that their prices are out of hand. The company grows worse, and worse every year. Their benefits and perks are ranked the worse in retail. Their technology is inferior to other stores."
