Default Question for Dish Network customers

We currently have Dish Network in our house up north and I'd like to use their "Dish Mover" program to put it in our CYV when we move down later this year. It currently has Comcast in all 3 BR's and the main living area.

I'm assuming -- perhaps wrongly -- that most properties in TV are wired for Comcast cable also. That being the case, I was wondering if the Dish Network installers leveraged that cabling or if they had to pull new wires for your install?

As background info, I plan on using the same boxes we have up north -- a dual-tuner HD box for 2 BR's and the dual-tuner HD DVR to connect the living room and 3rd BR (computer room).

Lastly, just wondering where the installers located your dish? I've seen a couple of properties for sale with pics of a dish in their backyards and also recall a couple of threads where folks mentioned dishes on their roofs. Does one have to get permission from TV to put it on your roof?

Thanks for your help!

Dish installed our system using existing cable already in the house meant for cable. Our dish is ground mounted on a post but many in our area are getting roof mounts. I may do this because my ground mount will eventually be obstructed by growing palm trees.

We switched from Comcast to Dish. Have the 4 room, 2 receivers setup. All our rooms are cable ready and there was no need to run additional cable. Remember to locate your receiver close to a phone jack to save the $5 per receiver monthly fee for signal connection. Our Dish is ground level, side back corner of home.

Default Thanks!!

That's definitely good news.

BTW -- I don't think Dish charges $5 if you don't have that land line connection anymore if you have a box connected to the internet. I have the 722 DVR connected so that I can access my pictures across the home network.

At least up in Delaware they're not charging extra as we only have mobile phones now. I just checked my bill a second ago and that charge is not there.

thanks again!!

In our designer each room has a cable to the box on the outside wall. When Dish comes they hook to the rooms you want to view in. Comsast does the same. You could have one room hooked to Dish, one to Direct TV and one to Comcast if you had the cash. It is all done from the outside.

I have had Dish now for about six months and love it. I also paid $40.00 for the phone jack since I don't have one in the living room. I am sold on it. Comcast has gone so high and have taken a lot of channels that used to be free to higher channels and now you have to pay for them - such as the TV Guide. What nonsense!

ILVGOLF: We had Dish for a while in Alabama, but we often didn't have good reception during cloudy days, or it was completely out during/after storms. It happened so often that we switched to cable.

Have you had any problems like that with DishTV during your past six months?

We are coming down in April and have yet to decide whether to get Dish or cable. Thanks.

K-9,

We're in Delaware and have had only 1 outage in the last 3-4 years. It was the Saturday before this past Super Bowl during the worst blizzard we've seen since I can remember.

Since the dish is physically located just above our ranch's gutters, it was not that difficult to get a ladder from the garage and go up to knock off the snow that had accumulated. Lucky for us since we had folks over for a Super Bowl party the next day!

On the contrary though, we had numerous outages with Comcast that they were never able to figure out. It would consistently go down between 4-6 PM when Oprah was on so wifey was none too happy. That frustration, along with their blase attitude towards customers, made me leave them.

As an aside, we did have Verizon FIOS for a year. Picture quality was great but I didn't like having to pay for a box on every TV and their DVR was not as good (feature and performance-wise) as Dish's.

Thanks for everyone's input!

I would venture to say that the location where your dish is installed will make a huge difference if you lose signal during rainstorms here in The Villages. Mine is located on a short pole at the back edge of my garage and I lose the signal during moderate to heavy rainstorms. Has stayed off as long as 15 minutes

We had DISH prior to moving to TV and have it here now. Our antenna is ground mounted in the back yard. But here's the glitch. They installed 2 dishes. Yeah that's what I said. Insist on only 1 dish. The technology is there. We may have had a rookie installer. I was told 1 was for HD & the other for conventional. Programming & picture is excellent. And yes heavy rain does affect the signal momentarily. We only had 1 dish up north that accomplished the same thing.

Default outages are a problem

We have had dish for about 18 months and we constantly have outages. Happens during rain storms and occasionally on just cloudy days. I would say 4 or 5 times a month more in rainy season. Only time it really bothers me if Judge Judy or Price is Right is on LOL.

Since moving here Jul '07 we kept wondering if we should terminate Comcast and get DISH. After having Comcast forever it was a difficult decision. In November we took the plunge and got DISH and it has been fantastic. It has never gone out and we have had many windy, stormy days. Our DISH is located on a pole at the back of our house. My husband can now watch the Big Ten!

We live in Illinois now and plan to move to TV in 2012. We have Dish and get the Big Ten Network because we have Big Ten schools in our state. How much is the fee to receive the Big Ten Network in a Florida house?

Default cost of Big 10

We plan to move down to our villa in September, after renting it out for 4 years. Currently have Comcast. My guy wants to get STO (Sports Time Ohio), FSNO (Fox Sports Network Ohio) and the Big Ten Network and of course, all the ESPN stations, including ESPNU. We have them now on WOW cable (Wide Open West). He has spoken directly to the Dish Network people, and can get all these things (except for ONN - Ohio News Network, which broadcasts Ohio High School football playoff games and some other stuff during the year).

Cost thru Dish Network is different than a package thru Century Link. We will probably get a land line (I can never keep track of my cellphone, might be in my golf bag, my purse, the kitchen or the laundry room at any time), cable and internet thru Century Link (used to be Embarq). Check out their website and put in the zipcode to see what's available and how much. Right now we are paying $71.97 for high speed internet and land line (local only - long distance blocked for tenants) and another $62.24 for Comcast cable (not HD and no premium channels, no DVR). Waiting till we move to swtich to get whatever freebies they usually offer for the first 3 mos or so. I believe it's going to be less for more once we move and consolidate everything.

Champion6 - I am a Penn State grad and my husband is a University of Illinois grad - he just loves having the Big Ten Network. We get our DISH service through Embarq as well as our land line and internet. Our bill is around $130 a month.
