Default recommendations to replace TRANE unit for a Villa

Sun Kool just did routine maintenance..unit which was built in 05..no major problems over the years with unit... ..but its getting old..rusty coil, etc..said we should 'replace'..as coils are expensive. So unit is 14 years old.

I would like some recommendations should we replace unit.

SunKool guy said it would be $4500 to replace..

Again, our unit right now is for 1300 sq ft villa..so we would not need a huge unit.

Thx

I would get at least 3 estimates, you will need the same ton rating as the original. I would look at higher SEER rating, but be aware as this rating goes up the cost really go up, so you my not save anything. I am assuming that you will be replacing the both outside and inside units, my understand is that there are some savings with the new variable speed air handlers. When you get the estimates make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

In my opinion, you should definitely replace the entire system, including the inside supply fan unit, instead of replacing a coil. Get three estimates. And, don't spend extra money on an SEER rating that is higher than the mandatory rating. The new mandated SEER ratings are probably higher than the unit that you are replacing. Basically, the new outside condenser unit will be larger than the one you have, which makes it more efficient. I think Sun Kool is a good company, and also Chuck Farrell and Munn's.

Technology has changed a lot in 14 years. Take that into account.

Where I live now, I just replaced our forced hot air furnace with a new Trane unit. We cannot compare decisions, except that our was 23 yrs old and the technological advances made it a no-brainer for me. The new unit is much more efficient and “right-sized” for our home. The original unit was installed as a “one-size-fits-all”. The builder used the same size unit for all homes they were building. Our furnace ended up too large for our home (inefficient).

Look at your options. As others have rightly stated, get many quotes, make an informed decision. When in doubt, you may want to ask others in the community for their opinions (as you have done here). Neighbors make good neighbors :-).

Was the $4500 quote just for the coil, or for a whole HVAC system?
Chuck Farrell did our whole HVAC system this year for less than your quote.
Remember if you replace a gas furnace with gas Teco gives a $500 rebate?

Did our whole HVAC system just less than 2 years ago with Chuck Farrell. Great price and they did the paperwork for me to get the $500. from TECO Gas. They are on time, clean and neat. Not a penny upfront. Paid when they finished and I was happy.
