Does anyone have an experience with these kind of screens for the lanai/birdcage? There are a few companies that do it. I can see the advantage for winter you have a clear view and heat would b retained. The person I am working with doesn't like the look of the solar screens and is more concerned about rain. However, I think a big downside would be it would be too hot to sit in watching the rain in the summer? If anyone has thoughts or has done it and has a vendor they liked. I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I thought I did another post so I hope this is not a duplicate. I think I may have solved the vinyl clear screen. I have checked with Sumter building department and if an engineer certifies a birdcage roof can withstand winds of 135 mph than it may be doable.
Has anyone put in a solid clear roof on their birdcage? If so what material was used? Do you have any issues with drainage with heavy rain? If you have vendor recommendations I would appreciate it. Thank you. |

The original design of the birdcage was not for a material other than the screening, or possibly canvas. I am guessing that going to a rigid clear material will require some modification to the system used to mount the material, and possibly to the struts. If you are using a clear flexible vinyl, then it maybe possible to use the original design. We just had a birdcage installed, and used heavier screening in the roof (50% sunblock) and pet screen in the bottom section. In both cases special splining was used due to the thicker material.
Your comment above did not reference if the clear vinyl was on the sides or the roof of the birdcage, so I will assume you will do to appropriate checks for the wind load on the structure, especially if you are enclosing the entire structure. NOTE: it will get really HOT in the summer, my get really HOT with just the roof done in the clear, ask around.

Thank you. My client is having the lanai and birdcage remodeled. I have sent questions out to the bids we have to see if they can design the birdcage as she wants. One has already been in contact and said he will research.
I have cautioned about the additional heat. |
