“Besides Love and Twinkies, not all things last forever.” (Isn’t that the truth!)

These are prudent words from a very good acquaintance of mine here in The Villages. He has no affiliation to SkyLight Roofing Villages nor a promoter. Just a friend/ acquaintance whom we respect. His perceptive approach is how we like to treat all our neighbors. With honesty and insightful facts. With accuracy and preparedness. A respectful partnership if you will. (No sales. No scam. No fraud).

I inspected his roof a year or so ago (maybe a couple years ago now) and he simply didn’t need a roof at the time. He asked me out again last week. I provided an honest follow-up inspection without touching a thing on the rooftop; simply walking gingerly and assessing. Roof material is original Villages sub-par builder grade laminate. An entry-level architectural shingle with life expectancy not meant to push too far beyond 12-14 years. It’s just the way it is in Florida without proper ventilation, underlay, and passive baffles.

He gave his neighbors and I some pretty good insight recently; he (and his lovely Wife) care about quality roofing services being done at the right time, with the right company, for the right price, and with best possible “long-lasting” products. Not being sold, solicited, harassed, or being told insincere mistruths.

Here’s what he said:

“Some have been here for all eleven years, others a couple of years less and still others more recently. However, the house you call your home in The Villages has been here every day of those eleven years! And, just like us humans, things need to be fixed, repaired or replaced.

We all face the maintenance and/or possible replacement of the essentials - appliances, air conditioning and, of course, our roofs. Some have already been replaced. For the rest of us, that day is in our future.

We’re constantly being barraged with unwanted solicitations, constant ads and mailings and confusion about the different standards of shingles, quality of work, guarantees and workmanship.

I just met again with Brent Maloy of Skylight Roofing Villages to do an inspection of our roof. While we have no immediate concerns (according to him) we will eventually face replacement sometime down the road.

So, I thought maybe Brent could present to us as a group, not to sell but to inform and educate (He is a Villager, FL licensed Roofer, FL licensed inspector, and FL licensed adjuster). He would answer our questions and give us advice as to the nuances of replacing our roofs.

If there’s enough interest in learning more about what we all will eventually face, I would set up a time (probably mid October) and place for Brent to present to us as a group and answer our questions honestly.

Again, this is an informational session, not a sales pitch. Obviously, Brent would like to be your choice but the purpose is education, not taking orders. There are other quality, respected and responsible roofers in addition to Skylight Villages and neither Carol nor I benefit in any way. The world cruise is merely a coincidence! (I hope you realize I’m just kidding!)

….What he has has basically established is a quality relationship with neighbors through discerned planning. Making good choices about not rushing in, signing insurance rights away, looking at our business tenure, products, accreditation, and what neighbors have been saying in The Villages (For over 20 years). It’s the framework and footprint we hope more Villagers will follow to allow for “honest services to prevail”.
