Default AC Service Problems

As a northerner, I feel that in my retirement years in Florida, one thing I do not want to deal with is lack of air conditioner. For that reason I planned for quick repair and or replacement. Paid extra money for warranty and extended warranty and signed up for repair priority club with 24 hour service.

Not wanting to name the company but what a waste as I spend my second night without AC. House temp is now 87 and outside is 86 at 10:25 PM.

Called repair number and you get an voicemail account. Second call got a response. Sunday afternoon visit diagnosed problem, but no corrective parts. Supposed Monday morning repair not scheduled. Call to company confirmed parts available but repair scheduled for 3 PM till 6 PM. No show with no call to advise. Again call to company gets voicemail and response slow. At 10:30 PM finally get sorry call.

I think the answer to the priority club cost of $200 is to buy a window AC for about that price and use it during these extended repairs. I know they are not condoned but I am sure you can use during outages such as described. For about $150 you could have temporary relief while you wait several days for your priority AC company service.

Hopefully day 3 priority is better . Was told I should get first priority. Yea. That's why I was told this AM that they were still working Friday calls.

Sorry for my rant.

Would like the name of the company also. Sounds like some one to avoid for sure.

Obviously this company is not set up to provide any type of priority service otherwise they would have the parts in stock. I agree with the other posters that you should name the company and get some compensation from them for the inconvenience and broken contract.

Well, the promise was that it was to be fixed and I even got a call back at 10:30 PM saying sorry. This is not Baltimore and I can't just join the crowds and loot the stores after closing.

I have not named the company as I would like to give them the benefit of explaining and rectifying the problem.

However, this is a heads up to others. It might be wise to have a room AC to cover such events. Perhaps a neighbor has one packed away and it could be borrowed. So I will check that out. If not, I will buy one and notify my neighbors that it is available in the event they experience a similar event.

Meanwhile, at 7:39 AM Weds, I sit on my 79 degree deck as opposed to my 85 degree house awaiting a fleet of trucks coming to our rescue at 8:00 AM. Well maybe I might have to make a call or two and a trip to Home Depot.

No fleet, so made several calls. No committed time. So went to home depot and got a portable AC. Got home to find an AC tech working the problem. Fixed by 11:30 AM. SO portable AC not needed but I am keeping it as a backup for next time or for friends in need.

We have one in our Northern Home just in case we lose electricity. 1 window AC uses less electricity when using a backup generator. It is always good as a backup.

Last season, we had Chuck Farrell do an annual service. The price was more than reasonable. When I asked about an annual service contract, he said "don't waste your money". A few weeks later, the blower motor control stopped working. Called Chuck, and his mechanic was there to evaluate the problem within a couple of hours. The part had to be ordered, so he offered a loaner window unit to use that very hot night. We had already made other arrangements, but at the time, I felt that we had finally found a service company that was actually interested in providing service. Would not consider anyone else for AC service.

There are no guarantees despite what business people advertise.

However after 8.5 years we had a blower go out on the heating/cooling unit.
Builders are noted for installing only the minimum in appliances etc. So I bought the best heating cooling unit for the money and bought a 10 year package for parts and service. Are there any guarantees no but this unit is so quiet that I can't ear it running when I am in my garage and I can remotely control it.

The "best" has nothing to do with reliability. Bells & whistles is what you'll get, which is fine but don't expect it not to break. Adding more components actually increases the potential for a breakdown. Simple is the way to go. It will cost you slightly in energy efficiency but the cost savings will be made up in terms of decreased service calls and aggravation. I'm in the trade, I know these things...
