Default Sunpass vs E-Pass

In New York we had the E-Zpass system which could be used for payment of tolls throughout the Northeast. It appears that Florida has two systems - Sunpass and E-pass. What is the difference between the two systems? Is one system better than the other?

My wife and I go to the Orlando/Kissimee area on a regular basis and I currently pay the tolls in cash. I would like to get a transponder to pay the tolls but I'm not sure what to get. It appears that the Florida Turnpike uses Sunpass but then other toll roads in the Orlando area have E-pass signs.

I would appreciate any advice on this subject.

Get a sunpass. It's compatible with all the other toll systems here in Florida.

Sun-Pass works with most of the toll roads in Florida as shown in this link:

It sounds like Sunpass may be the way to go. Thanks for the advice.

I think SunPass took over Epass in Florida a couple years back now.

I have the tiny stick-on by the rear view mirror, I like that better than the transponder.

any Publix, toll plaza, etc, can set you up, then online to replenish is what I do

That's correct John. Just one transponder/sticker needed.

Default Sunpass

What happens when you constantly have to rent a car each time you come down? Someone told me that it can only be used on 3 rental cars.

That's correct. I have one and take it with me. Just enter the lic # of the rental through the internet.

It's not imperative that it get done first thing. But I just go onto my blackberry and update when I get in my rental. I would think that they have internet within the airport as well.

How much is it to drive from the villages to Orlando?
I looked on the e-pass web site. They had the cost of the 'mini' pass at $25. A note said that if your balance is less than $15 you will get some sort of notice. What i couldn't find was how much the charge is at the toll stations and how far apart they are.
I've never lived in a place with toll roads. To me they are a bad idea.

Does anyone think these electronic pass devices are a bad idea? I think it makes it far too easy to tax, and will only result in more and more toll roads. Next think you know they will tax based on mileage, speed, and location everywhere. Is this really the type of life we want? Simple solution is raise the road money by using fuel tax, which also encourages conservation, and collect it at the pump.
