From a retired floor man, if you have tile thru out the house there is a way for the tack strip to be put down without destroying tile. Elmers glue(1gal) and 6 inch tack strip with no nails.(Home Depot) Small stream of the glue is poured out, then you go back pressing the strip into it with the top nails facing the wall, approx 1/2 inch away from wall. The flooring companies can do that also, but a lot of them I have heard down here drill down the tack strip. It takes several days to set up, but holds as good as anything.
Always go with Nylon carpet, never Polyester, holds up much better at least 50oz or more.
Make sure you have a good pad
Demand they power stretch, will never buckle on you.
Power stretching and glueing tack strip may cost a little more, but you will be glad you did it.

This information is priceless!!!!!!! How can we preserve it and make it easily available to future interested folks? Hey Sparky. How about moving this to the Do It Yourself forum and call it "How a Carpet should be installed next to tile".
