Default Water conditioning - outside of TV - any insight

Our 'systems' in TV seem to produce OK water and are both under 10 years old, so no news is good news.
The one back north, however, gave up the ghost

On a well.Never had a softener, just an acid neutralizer.Water is hard and hovering about 6.2 pH.
If the neutralizer gets replaced, 'they' say, the water gets harder.
Se we're looking at a softener
big ? is salt v. salt-free ('scale reducer/remover')
talk to 10 'experts' get 15 opinions

Thanks in advance
