Question Refrigerator Water Line Replacement?

I went to Home Depot to buy a new refrigerator and they told me that since I have the plastic push/pull water shutoffs in my house they will not install a new water supply line. They said the existing supply line, a nylon reinforced plastic line, is squeezed on to the shutoff. They said the homeowner has to change it while they stand there and watch. I suppose the push/pull plastic shutoffs have a reputation for breaking, although they didn't say that.

If you ran into this problem, how did you deal with it?

It's probably prudent to change the 10 year old supply line, but did anyone just leave it in place?

Thanks

I have not had to replace any of these yet, however, there was a previous thread on the subject, and as I recall several YouTube videos on how to do this yourself. Personally, I would be nervous about reusing the original supply line.
Your other option would be to have a plumber come out BEFORE the new refrigerator is due for delivery and have the new valve/line installed.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. Probably hiring a plumber is the best choice, get it over and done with. Might as well get the toilets done too.

Unless there is tearing into the walls, the only thing that can be changed is the push/pull valve to a tradtional valve.....which is most likely the intent.

FYI- I would strongly recommend changing to stainless steel with a auto shut off. We were away for 3 days and came back to a flooded house from that small hose. Have since heard of several other people having the same issue. You really don't think about it until it happens to you, sort of like a lint fire. Having a plumber is less costly in the long run.

Hi jimmydoodlebug

I had that same conversation with Home Depot when we decided to rid ourselves of the kitchen appliances installed . They gave us the same sad story. So we purchased our appliances elsewhere and viola they had absolutely no problems attaching the new water supply line.

However I did have one plastic connection line under my master toilet leak so we replaced the entire valve. We considered replacing them all (9) but it gets expensive . We may well do it in 2016 to be on the safe side.

We also replaced our carbon dioxcide alarm and fire alarms twice. We bought in 2006

Default Ain't Gonna Happen

I pulled my refrigerator out and looked at the on/off valve. Forget about it. It sits in a plastic recess in the wall and the only way a plumber could replace it is to open up the wall to access the pipe. major surgery and not worth the effort.

I'm just going to re-use the existing water line, there's nothing wrong with it.
