And so it goes. I recall back in the not-too-distant day, when traveling cross-country meant gathering up paper maps, poring over them at wayside rests, and cussing when we encountered roadwork and either delays, detours or both. Nowadays, we just grab our phone, turn on WAZE, make sure the phone and the car radio can talk to each other, and away we go! WAZE takes us there no matter how far away "there" is, and even warns us about heavy traffic, cops, roadwork and detours! Stress-free. Of course there is always the possibility of something going haywire with the phone or the app, but I can still read maps if need be. Generations subsequent from mine (Boomer), undoubtedly have had less and less need of paper map usage and skill: I doubt many millennials could even read a road map and I'd bet fewer than one in 20 Gen Alpha kids even know what a paper road map is, or where you could get one if they needed it.

It is always like that. Knowledge builds upon prior knowledge. I recall thinking for decades that one of the most useful practical skills I learned in high school was typing (nowadays, "keyboarding", if they even teach that any more), and that on an old Underwood manual typewriter! I remember when those IBM Selectrics were the height of technology. But how useful is a skill I learned over half a century ago going to be for a Gen Alpha kid to even learn, when manual keyboards, in light of ever-more-sophisticated speech to text programs, are fast becoming buggy whips? Heck, it won't be long before even as rudimentary and necessary a skill as writing with a pen or pencil will be about as necessary as being able to carve and read Egyptian hieroglyphics?

It seems to be always like that. Essential knowledge to one generation is just useless baggage to subsequent ones.

Humanity will be just fine.
Hope so, on your last line. Problem is that some people will rely solely on AI. Garbage in-Garbage out will win

Sort of like many people not knowing where one location is from another in terms of north-south-east-west because they use GPS instead of actual maps. I use GPS plenty (and I can't imagine how life in The Villages would be without it), but I'm always amazed that lots of folks don't know where one city/town is in relation to another.

A former colleague of mine stopped using GPS while driving because he wasn't learning the area. I try to shut it off as soon as I don't need it, most times, its on just for traffic issues. . or long distance drives for potential accidents and rerouting. .

Saved us about an hour plus on the trip down to avoid a pileup on 95, about 3 miles before we would have gotten on the highway. . but locally with golf carts, only when going to a new area. .

turn off chatgpt if you want to learn / practice what you have requested so that you aren't useless when your battery is dead, or out of reception range.

I had 16 inch centers, but they didn’t start at 16 inches. The data given to me was entirely incorrect. When I questioned it, it came back with an apology and a new calculation that made some sense. Recently I asked it which nozzle I should use for soap in my power washer. Its response was wrong again, and when I questioned it, it blamed the error on Ryobi, stating that they use nozzle colors different from other manufacturers. Long story long, don’t trust everything you get from AI. It may be wrong.
It isn't amazing that ChatGPT is the most flawed "AI Tool" in the market today.

So true and the statistics prove it. Standardized tests are modified to produce results that appear to show improvement but test scores have been going down for decades.
Some pundits will believe that AI is the cure for what ails us.

critical thinking is getting shorter in supply. . .

critical thinking is not looking reciting facts,
critical thinking is about knowing the difference between facts and point of view/bias facts
about laws of nature facts and human opinions disguised as personal belief facts
between statements made from past facts, past facts with bias, and for future opinions/judgements, etc. . which haven't happened yet, so they can't be facts, or from false counterfactuals so wanting to be facts
It's not about knowing the right answers, so much as it is knowing which questions to ask.

thanks for agreeing, its still about what you know, in whatever domain one is typing about, answers or questions or prompts. . psychologists will all tell you that most of knowledge comes from experience, which means the older one is the wiser, knows more, if willing to learn from history

AI gets more 'meh' the more you use it, researchers find • The Register

The more complex the task, the less reliable AI is, as its a GLM, not an ELM
Generalized Language model, not an Expert Language Model

statistical pattern matching to find the next word/phrase in sentences. .
assumes that all answers have been found and has been typed in text somewhere.

logically, new developments will not come from LLM,
it will just reinforce Common Knowledge. . the stuff which assumes everyone knows. .
won't make one an expert, just get by day to day a bit easier, but no advancement in day to day

good luck to them, . . we learned to old boomer way

Default Banning of Cell Phones

The banning of cell phones for student use should help curb AI use somewhat in education. It’s a poison that should be kept from students. A funny result from the banning in many states like New York and Florida, you now see students with flip phones as the newest trending “in” thing.
