It’s a quote that is used by medical professionals when they walk into your hospital or exam room after visiting other patients to protect you from something they may have contracted in the ward. It is known that a mask does not protect the wearer from someone else’s illness, but rather the other individual. That is why a patient or other also wears a mask if they have a contagious disease or compromised immune system, to protect others from catching what they may harbor. Not everybody knows this so some make it a point to say it. But I do detect a bit of snootiness by some who say it cause they think others need to be grateful to be accommodated for their sacrifice. But I ignore this tone as I wear mine in their presence and rather look them in the eye and say “thank you - what goes around comes around” very matter of factly and move on. Nothing is for nothing, if it ain’t for free. But and I say but, there is new evidence that a mask does protect the wearer to some extent as well. I agree with this finding, so in retrospect it’s all good.

Is the person making that statement also claiming a moral superiority over persons who choose not to wear masks and not benefit others?
If you are wearing the mask to protect others then there is the assumption you may have the disease and are capturing some of virus in the mask, a very good thing. However I have been asking this question from day 1 of this mess: What do you do with that mask after you remove it? Generally after use of the mask (contaminated mask) most all people put in back in their purse, pocket or console of their car. Just maybe, and I say maybe this practice of mask wearing has help spread this mess? I am not “anti mask” but if you a mask use a clean on every time and proper disposal of the dirty mask every time, oops who does that?

Not "moral superiority," just concern for the common good and public health.

If it actually did any good, I'd agree.

Yes, for sure, and rightly so.

Following the advice of experts in a field does do good. The advice may or may not always work, the advice may not be the best possible advice at any time, but in the long run, following the advice of experts in a given field will do the most good.

Is it the entire world that’s being hoodwinked or is it just you?

Not angry! Not ugly!

Just a bit frustrated when people tell me I have to wear a mask for THEM!

I am not the Lone Ranger!
