the post did not specify auto, house or life, health or other insurance is being impacted. I am not reading the article unless it's something actionable for me with insurance rates as many are paid to find issues upon which to type words.
there is a lot of insurance rates rising. . some I can adjust, some I can't |

Please try to stay on topic. We just removed 9 posts that weren’t even close to being about insurance.

Insurance companies charge higher rates for higher risk groups. That is how insurance works. To call it a penalty is not accurate.
One exception is health insurance because the Government puts their thumb on the scale and mandates that everyone pays the same amount regardless of the risk. |

If I am reading the article in the link correctly, both auto and homeowner insurance went up. Of course that may have been the usual yearly anniversary increase. If, however, it was timed specifically due to the loss of the spouse then, (again in the article) basing a rate on marital status is illegal according to Texas law (???). Yeah, doesn’t seem right but then insurance agencies seem to have their own set of laws.

From a risk factor, it makes sense. A window/we is almost always elderly. The elderly person is now alone, with no help or support. The risk just jumped by a lot.
Not saying it is right or wrong, but that it does make sense. As an aside, penalizing people for their martial status is codified int US law via the tax system. It is allowed by the fed gov for themselves at least. |

I was widowed at age 40 with four kids. This makes zero sense. 32 years later I have not seen any raise in insurances due to my marital status. I want to call this fake news. Snopes.com has no info on this

Do you still purchase TX auto and home insurance from one of the insurers (not all) that have this practice?
