If you go the route of buying a can of the spray texture, grab yourself a 2x2 piece of drywall to practice on. There's quite a bit of overspray when using the canned stuff as well, so make sure to account for that. Or, you can call Lori at "A Touch of Drywall" 352-636-6859.

The spray texture works well, as mentioned above, there is over spray, and if this is a concern, take some card board, cut a hole larger then the area to be sprayed, and hold the cardboard a couple of inches away from the wall, then spray though the hole to the wall. This should limit the over spray.

I totally agree with practicing on a piece of drywall before doing the repair. It is very tricky to get it right. Also, it is a good idea to heat the can in some hot water before using it. If the hole is very small (less than an inch) you may consider not using the spray because you may make it worse.

I would be very cautious about heating the can, too much heat may cause it to burst.......

I mean to just warm it up a bit. If it is cold, the stuff won't flow out very well.

Practice is good. Note two things: 1) it doesn't smell very good; make sure you have good ventilation, and 2) wait a few days for it to "firm up" before painting over it.

Knock down is another type of texture.

True, but the spray can method is a cross your fingers type of application. Despite my best efforts to duplicate the existing wall texture, it still goes on with peaks and valleys, which need to be taken down to match.

I bought Homax Wall Texture, Orange Peel (yellow can) in the Paint Department at Home Depot. I practiced on a pizza box.
