PXG hasn't been a "premier brand" since 2019, when they changed their business model. They are just another DTC brand these days, priced competitively (or lower) with the Big 4 (Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, PING).

There are bunch of DTC brands with comparable clubs, for far less money. MacGregor, L.A. Golf, Ben Hogan, Takomo, Vice and Sub70.

The best is always the custom club shops who see $$$$ in brand new never played golf customer and convince them they need to spend $4000 on a set of clubs and $800 putter. Without those clubs they could never play golf to their potential. Sadly their potential would be the same with clubs from Costco.

Hope nobody knocks on those residents door to sell them a bridge
See the above.

I played the Back 9 at TDS yesterday, with a set of irons I bought on eBay last month, for $150 total. Same clubs I played in 1992. The only club newer than 1992, was my Driver & 3W. Putter was a classic 8813 from 1975. Shot 38 on the front (with my regular clubs), 37 on the back. It's the Indian, not the arrow.

Same thing here, two sets both from pre owned. Substantial savings. See if you can go to a pga superstore and hit a few, then go back to the site. I think Callaway allows you to return and change models

I would seriously consider 2nd swing golf.com or PGA Superstore used rack. Big discounts on slightly used clubs. It’s where I get mine.
More club for the money.

Costco has a decent set of Callaway's for around $500, all the clubs you need and a bag included.

do you know anything about golf???? second question
if not be careful whose advice you take, not neighbor Bob who shoots 100 for 18 holes

did he play golf or at golf??? third question
Find out what score he shot for 18 holes when he played. If it's 95 and over what you get wont matter he has no golf swing he is playing at golf and not playing golf. This is not a negative, he may just enjoy being out there and does not care about the score just having a good time, nothing wrong with that. And it will cost you less. As long as they are a bag full and shiny will do the trick.

If he shoots bogey golf or better than he is playing golf and concerned with improvement. This will cost you more.

If you really want to do it right and he is here for 4 or 5 days at Christmas, find a pro to teach him for 2 days. A solid 2 days, 6 hours per day. Pay the pro 500$. He is young even to handle and this one on one will produce dividends. Preferably the lessons are outside and not inside. Better feel for the real. Then have him get fitted, PGA Superstore can do this and he wont be limited to 1 club maker and he will have a semblance of a golf swing. Don't scrimp on the lessons. Once fitted he can choose the right clubhead for him. The fitter will do the rest.

Then he will be enjoying your gift for the rest of his life and will be ever grateful. PRICELESS and in 1 year he wont be looking for his next set of clubs. Maybe at least 5- 7 yers before the marketing of golf clubs can grab him.

One pro's opinion given your situation..........answering question 1 will determine the Road to follow.........and as a side benefit you won't worry about keeping him busy while he is here. PRICELESS
Thank you

Get him a fitting with Tim Colanta at Central Lake Custom Club Shop; one of the best fitters there is anywhere; fits for all manufacturers, not just one brand. 352-753-6658

As somebody who just bought new clubs for myself, I would not have wanted anyone else to pick them out for me. I would get him a gift card for the PGA Superstore and let him pick them out. They also have a very generous return/exchange policy there .

Thank you I believe that you were right. I should not pick out his clubs for him. He needs to do that himself.

I don't know if they are "premier" but I do know they are damned expensive.
