I had a gal schedule a golf lesson and she said she was an absolute beginner. I had never heard that expression before. Absolute is a pretty strict term. When she arrived, I opened the trunk of her car and pulled her clubs out. All of the grips were sticking out the top of the bag and all the club heads were all in the bottom of the bag. At that point in time, I was able to define being an absolute beginner.
I was hitting balls at the Sarasota Range, balls go into water if you can carry it 40 yards. A lady next to me hit one into the water and she was ecstatic. She turned to her friend who was impressed and said, " I learned how to play yesterday, Why don't you learn tomorrow and then we can go out on the golf course!" For those folks who are beginners, the Villages Golf Academies offer great programs to introduce golf to you. This is the best place to start a rest of your lifetime great enjoyment of the game. Golf is cheaper than psychiatry and you will enjoy the outdoors and the immense social benefits. Most importantly, you will find out if you don't like it!!!!!!!!!!! No wrong answer here. The largest group of folks getting into golf are women. The largest group of folks getting out of golf are women. Truthfully, it is not for everyone. You just have to find out if it's right for you. These beginner group lessons will teach you grip, stance, aim, and set-up. The good news is that this boring stuff will serve you well the rest of your golf life, best learn it correctly now than float around you tube for 100 different opinions which you don't understand any of. You're still absolute. And it is boring, But, without it, your golf struggles will increase exponentially. Once you have decided you like it, the next step is to get one on one lessons. When you pick out an instructor, lots in the Villages, your first lesson is to judge them. I don't care what subject you are trying to learn, if you and the instructor cannot communicate the best thing is to find one who you understand. We instructors have no problem with that, we understand completely. We want you to improve and that may be with someone else. No harm no foul. I had a new lady member tell me she was thinking of taking a golf lesson. I said great, I know I can help you. Did you ever take a lesson at your last club? She grimaced at me as she said yes. I said, what did you learn. She gave me a bigger grimace as she said," I learned that he knew how to hit a golf ball." Communication and understand is key with anything. Your one on one lessons, I believe, should be in the following sequence and only 1 topic per lesson. Chipping, Pitching, Irons, Woods. These would only be 1/2 hour lessons for chipping and pitching. Same for irons and woods but 2 lessons each. Putting would follow last. WHY? If it takes you 6 shots to reach the green, once you get there just pick up the ball. Even one putting at that point means nothing. Learn how to get to the green first. Some of the movements you will learn chipping and pitching will be small pieces of larger swings. You will learn how to co-ordinate your body parts correctly. Easier when movement is smaller. And once you have those movements, you own them for life. Imagine that! If you're serious about enjoying golf to the fullest, this is a great process. You can buy all the golf clubs you want. You can buy all the neat golf clothes you want. BUT, if you don't know your golf swings, you will just embarrass yourself. Time and time again. Now that doesn't sound like fun. Golf is one of the few sports where only you can take credit for a good shot. That my fiends is a great natural high. It is truly priceless and will change and enhance your life beyond expectations. All you have to do is learn correctly.

Good Post. Just picked up clubs for my wife who is an absolute beginner. Plan on getting her enrolled in the New to Golf school and then take it from there. |
