Default New to Golf

Why is it almost everything one can be interested in there is a club or activity that will teach a villager how to do that activity except for Golf.. For Golf the introduction class is $325..

Does anyone know of a club or activities for a couple who are totally new to golf and want to learn about golf?

A good place to start is the Villages Good Golf School.

Good Golf School

If you just want to "social golf" with friends and neighbors, playing best ball at Pitch & Putts" and the level 1 or 2 Executive courses is fun.

If you want to get more serious, I'm sure the real golfers will weigh in.

Ask your neighbors, that is how I got started.

$325 seems like a small price to pay to get started on the right foot. I would suggest doing that.

I agree, best to learn right way than trying fix wrong way after it’s imprinted in persons brain. After that it’s practice, practice, and more practice.

Another vote for taking lessons. While most of us can learn a new card game fairly quickly, it is hard to learn a good golf swing/ game without a good golf coach. The money spent early on will help you enjoy the game so much more.

That's $650 for both my wife and I.

It just seems strange to me, that anything one can imagine wanting to get involved in, has a free club or class one can take for free that is part of The Villages except the largest one Golf.

Golf is hard to learn and even harder to teach. Many good players cannot accurately explain how their swing works. Most people first playing golf have poor instincts and often do the opposite of what works. The golf swing is not a natural motion.

You cannot learn golf from a club meeting

I’m not sure about anyone else, but I lose interest quickly in something I am not good at. I would call Oxford Golf Academy and schedule some lessons with Billy Speckman. They have package deals less than the $325 and you will get started on the right foot.

How Tiger Woods taught his son to play golf:
Approach to teaching
Keep it fun: Tiger's priority is to make golf enjoyable through activities like putting and chipping contests, creating a positive association with the game.
Focus on feel over mechanics: Instead of focusing on rigid drills, Tiger encourages Charlie to develop a "feel" for the game by hitting specific shots and making adjustments.
Start with fundamentals: He begins with simple skills like putting and chipping closer to the hole, gradually progressing to the full swing.
Emphasize key fundamentals: Two crucial swing principles are consistently hitting the ball in the center of the clubface and finishing with a balanced, stable pose.
Use competitive "mind games": Tiger employs "mind games," such as setting a competitive par for each hole, to build mental toughness and prepare Charlie for the pressure of tournaments.

The Good Golf School is an "meeting" covering the Tee Time system and general course etiquette including pace of play.

It's a fair question given the Villages and several organized sports clubs offer organized introductions and instruction to most other sports at no cost.

Default Don’t teach your wife to play golf

The third most common reason for divorce, after finances and infidelity, is trying to teach your wife to play golf.

The golf swing is difficult to do and is never mastered. One of the barriers to developing a good swing is not being able to see yourself. So when you try to tell someone they are doing something wrong, they don’t believe you. The downswing of a golf stroke happens in less than a half second.

The best lessons involve video recording of the swing. The instructor can use slow and stop motion to demonstrate exactly what the golfer is doing during the swing.

A golf swing involves: turning the hips and shoulders away from the ball; shifting your weight from front foot to back foot without sliding back; cocking your wrists as you swing the club backwards; not bowing the left wrist throughout the swing; shifting your weight to your front foot by rotating your body without sliding forward; releasing the cock of the wrists as the club approaches the level of the hips; maintaining same angle of the spine throughout the swing without moving the head or the coccyx; continuing the acceleration of the club head through the ball; etc. It’s all very simple.

Please take lessons before you go out on the course!
