So I play a lot of Championship golf and usually book the night before, by joining an open slot.
When I check in at the Starters Shack, I always ask for the names of the other players in the group. I take a scorecard and write down the names. I'm typically only given 1st names (which is all that's necessary). 3 people I've played with in the last 4 days, have told me a different name than I was told at the Starter shack. None of the situations involved a "group", where foursomes may have been switched around. I understand it's possible that someone is generally known by a name, other than the legal name that's on their ID, but 3 times out of 12 people? Today I played with 2 guys from Canada. Neither were owners in TV, but both paid Resident Rates and one's name didn't match what I was told by the starter. Are golfers using other people's ID's to register for golf? Is that a common practice? Does anyone at the golf shops, actually look at the photos on ID cards? Certainly not that I've noticed. |

As long as someone pays I don’t think they care.

Being a starter, I can attest it is quite common that the legal name shown on the id is not the name they go by. In those cases it most often is their middle name or variation of same.

Spouse’s Tuesday golf group of 33, 10 DO not use the given name on their ID. Finding this more common as the new guys come in, or the older guys still use their boyhood nickname.
He Played this week with two from Scotland. Neither used their given names, not that one could understand their name anyway, except for his partner who is Scottish. Both had resident IDs. Most owners will offer the $50 fee. Those who are coming specifically for golf will pay it. However OP might want to contact golf admin a second time with a fool proof plan on how to make sure everyone is paying the correct rate, and not possibly using a resident ID for a better rate, illegally. And use their legal name on score card.

I play with three friends whose cards do not match the name they go by. Even my name on my ID card is not the name they call me. James (Jim) Glenn (Pete) Richard (Jeff). frank (Gene) Golfers go by nicknames and part of their last names sometimes. Who cares as long as you pay and are competent “nice” guys.

I moved here in ‘09.
Recently The attendant was checking our ID’s at the pool for a class. He scanned my ID and said, “I know that’s not you, but the ID is valid” I laughed and told him, “that was me 15 years ago. “ So yea, the ID’s aren’t always a match. |

Officially I'm Joseph, casually I'm Joe. However, due to a joke by a sister-in-law some years ago, in my family I'm called Diego. Not a middle name, not a Catholic confirmation name, not even remotely close to, rhyming, or humorous with my last name either. Completely random. But Diego I am. That will not be on ANY I.D.

In my 12 years in The Villages, my ID card has always been scanned when checking in at the proshop, but the Executive courses seem to vary depending on which attendant is there, but most seem to match the ID with the face.

I came across ( about 6 months ago) when I got a tee time with a group of 7, that the group of 3 that was with that one of the golfers was from Stonecrest. I noticed that in conversation and a Stonecrest bar code sticker on that person’s golf cart! That the person had to be a non- Villages friend!

Love the justifications here. Because of COURSE your ID only shows your first name, not your last, and there's no photo to match (except that one person who said the photo was from years ago) the person who's standing there in person.

Actually in my group, you have to look around to see if anyone is using their legal name. They prefer their Nick names, “Sandy, Buffy, Dee,” etc
