Question 1 - do you enjoy making birdies, pars and bogeys, or bogeys and double and triple bogies?
Question 2- can you break 80, (shoot in the seventies) regularly from the tee areas you chose to play? If the answer in #1 is birdies pars and bogeys, and the answer in #2 is Yes, then your playing from the proper set of tees. If the answer to question 1 is Birdies, Pars, and Bogeys and the answer to #2 is No, You need to move forward until you can break 80 regularly. If the answer to #1 is bogeys, double bogeys and triple bogies and the answer to #2 is No. Then you are playing the right set of tees. This is not a complicated issue. Its just that ego's get into enjoyment. If you're shooting 100 and don't give a damn, then great, just keep having fun. But let us know who you are so we don't get stuck playing behind you. I think competitions should be played without handicaps. The handicaps are useful for assigning the tees to hit from. 0-4 Black, 5-9, blue, 10-20, white, 21 and up green. When your Playing Au Natural, without handicaps, it is real golf. Handicaps are manufactured numbers, manipulated numbers, and comfort zones for folks. When I encountered an ego distance driven Youth , I would say, Play from the Ladies tee and when you break Par I will move you back another set of tees. It took longer for them to move back to the tees they wanted to play but they were better for it!

The handicap system breaks down for Senior Players.
The 0-4's playing from the Black Tees, would get hammered by the 5-9's playing from the Blues. No one gets to play from the Gold's? You do know they have Gold Tees in TV, right? |

Well, the reality is that there are many golfers out there that already play from the far forward senior tees, that have taken multiple lessons and tried their absolute hardest to shot birdies, pars, and bogeys, and would absolutely love to consistency break 80’s, but they can’t. Golf is a difficult game, and people shouldn’t be shamed for not achieving someone else’s goals. As long as golfers are having fun, respecting the golf course, and (most importantly) not slowing down other golfers, it’s all good. Golf on : )

I am not telling you where to play. You fall into the category of I dont care what I shoot I just want to have fun and get exercise.
That my friend is an enviable position. And you play fast and take care of the golf course--------many cudo's Just don't compete with anyone or your world will get upside down. Just enjoy....... My life has been spent being judged by what I shoot, it is an awful burden...... finding your enjoyment would be wonderful...maybe when I hit 80 years young, ..there is still hope Quote:

Golfers who shoot between 80 and 90 have the most fun.
Much above 90 you feel lost. You aren't confident in your swing, you have too many blow up holes. Unless you are 95 shooter who new to the game and getting better, its not a fun place to be. But below 80 is no picnic either. You make a double on #1 and your day is ruined. Unless you are uber-talented, maintaining a single digit index is a full-time job. Everyone expects you to shoot in the 70s every day and no one understands that single digit players can make a 90. Forget about winning any net events because some 25 index player will shoot a net 60. But gross events are out of reach as well, because there are too many +2's in your club. |

I quit playing golf for about 10 years, when my daughter was born. I told myself, if I ever go back to playing golf, I want to be a 10-12 Index. Easy to maintain, little or no pressure. You're right, being a single-digit takes work.
Although equipment has changed a lot. I've been a mid-single digit for 40 years or so & I'm at 4.4 now. I was a way better player at 40, when I was at 6 or so. If I was still playing the equipment I played with when I was 40, I'd be a 10 now. Last edited by BrianL99; 08-06-2026 at 05:25 AM. |

We play championship course once a week and the 4 of us keep score with getting a point if you have low score for the hole. We play from the green tees (I'm 77). I try to play in the 80s and to win some holes. At the end we don't exchange money - we exchange hand shakes and say "good time and fun". Each player may win a few points but at the end all leave happy trying to play their best and enjoy the company (as well as a beer and a shot of limoncello if a birdie)

I played with a group of 16 and not one of them kept score. They weren’t competitive and only played to have fun. Some were good golfers and some not as much. Everyone went out to have a social outing and enjoy nature.

Handicaps based on TV courses are only "accurate" in TV.
TV courses are made for ease of play and speed of play........ Wide fairways, "no" roughs, flat greens, limited traps. Enjoy.
