Detroit native on course to play 14,000 holes in year

In the past 12 months,Detroit native John Verdura has played 72 holes of golf in one day — twice. Heoften has golfed from sunup to sundown. At one point, he played 78 straightdays. Verdura has fallen into a frigid pond on a 38-degree day and kept playing.He has golfed in 107 degrees. He has slashed at balls in high winds and poundedthem through heavy rain. He has recorded four holes-in-one. Verdura, 63, crushed the record Richard Lewis set in 2010 when he played 11,000 holes in Irving, Texas. Verdura — who has not met Lewis — began his attempt Aug. 1 and broke Lewis’ record May 11 He’s nearly on pace to play 14,000 holes by July 31. Verdura’s record will remain unofficial until the end of July, when he submits scorecards signed by witnesses as proof to Guinness for verification
