Default Wells Fargo data breach earlier this month

Not sure that the details are, but a password change should be in order

I did not receive anything from Wells Fargo about a data breach.... this looks like a phishing scam. Be careful.

Likewise. I'm pretty sure Wells Fargo would let people know. In any case one can call and ask.

In any case though it is wise advise concerning passwords. Periodic password changes as well as a two-step verification process (password AND a code sent to your phone needed to sign on) are always good ideas.

I haven't received anything either, however, that doesn't mean its not true.

Sent the screenshot to Chat GPT for a deep dive:

...

What actually happened

Wells Fargo notified affected customers after learning that checks and deposit slips containing customer information were physically stolen from a Wells Fargo location on January 9, 2026. The exposed information may have included:

* Name
* Address
* Bank account number without an online-banking access code

The notification does not describe hackers penetrating wellsfargo.com, stealing passwords, or compromising Wells Fargo’s online banking system.

Massachusetts published Wells Fargo breach notices in April and June 2026. Its 2026 breach report shows at least two separate Wells Fargo filings, including filing 2026-896, reported June 2, and 2026-986, subsequently published in June. The reported Massachusetts impact appears very small—only a few residents—but that does not reveal the total number affected nationwide.

Why Malwarebytes says July 1

The wording in your screenshot says:

“On July 1, 2026, it was found that a data breach of wellsfargo.com may have exposed sensitive information.”

That is probably the date Malwarebytes added, indexed or detected the breach in its database, not the date the incident occurred. Malwarebytes Browser Guard displays breach warnings when visiting a domain associated with a breach record, but that does not necessarily mean the website itself was hacked.

My conclusion

Yes, there was a recent Wells Fargo customer-information incident. However, available official records indicate physical documents were stolen—not that wellsfargo.com suffered a major cyberattack.

The alert also does not mean your information was involved. Wells Fargo should send a direct letter or secure banking message to anyone it identified as affected.

For reasonable protection:

1. Review recent transactions and deposited-check images.
2. Enable transaction alerts.
3. Do not change your password solely because of this alert, although a unique password and two-step verification remain advisable.
4. Contact Wells Fargo through the number printed on your card or the official app—not through the Malwarebytes pop-up—if you want them to check whether your account was included.

Wells Fargo says it will never ask for your complete password, card PIN or one-time security code when contacting you.

Wells Fargo - famous, or rather infamous, for creating false accounts.
