From Ben Franklin's autobiography, regarding smallpox vaccines:

“In 1736 I lost one of my sons, a fine boy of four years old, by the small-pox, taken in the common way. I long regretted bitterly, and still regret that I had not given it to him by inoculation. Interesting to me. The Boston tea party, the Constitution etc. They didn't know about germs but they did know that City water would make you ill. Tea you boil the water and it kills the germs. Alcohol in liquor does the same. Point our forefathers and their amazing work probably were a bit drunk.
