You never surprise any spouse, male or female with a very expensive gift bought with funds belonging to both parties, as in a marriage, unless you are 100 % sure it's exactly what they want. The guy was stupid and now pays the price by watching his wife drive the truck of his dreams. Hopefully he'll learn from it. Take her to the dealership next time and let her pick her gift.

So, the guy wanted a pickup truck and ends up with an SUV. Bummer. What would you do if you were the guy? Or, the woman?
The guy should have "grown" a couple and stood his ground!!!

Default Reality

I would tell both of them to face reality. However, do you really think that this depiction of holiday giving lines up with the truth? This is not a realistic view of the world.

Obviously not for everyone. But, it seems as though the vehicle companies are trying encourage people to make it true.

What I bought for myself is mine. I would of only presented the gift (car) I bought my spouse . That was their gift. As the saying goes," Never look a gift horse in the mouth"
With that being said, My husband knows better than to buy me something that can't be returned!

I did give that one some thought. I immediately thought it was a bit of a "throw back" to the days when "the nagging wife" was a staple character on TV. Males in the villages over about 70 were "raised" on these ideas - but I digress. I then thought - this could be "What a nice guy, he adores that women" but also quickly thought "He knows she won't happily sleep with him unless he cooperates".

I cannot really answer "What would you do?" since I am not a "guy" and I do think they dynamics of a wife work differently, on average, from the dynamics of a husband. But if my husband wanted a vehicle I had intended for myself my response would depend on how attached I was to my choice. This is assuming - by the way - that the "exchange period" on vehicles had passed, because obviously if it were in effect, just exchange the vehicle neither wants. But if no exchange were possible - If I did not care all that much, I'd let him have his preferred vehicle. If I did care, I'd tell him so, and together we were work out who "cared most" about the issue. I always though that might be a good way to work out conflict in marriage - trying to see who "cared most" about an outcome and letting them "have their way" if no compromise could be found and no one could be convinced to change their mind.

I also thought "Dad would have done that for Mom because he adored her". Probably my nicest, least cynical response to the commercial.

I'd of course have done it for any man I adored, but I have never cared all that much about the type of car I drive, so no big deal for me.
