That is a sylvester palm that some idiot diamond cut WAY too much and WAY too early after planting, increasing the chance and severity of any shock in the transplant.

You probably won't see a rat because they're mostly nocturnal. But please rest assured (!) that your tree(s) have been and probably are home to some of the critters. They live in the canopy of palm trees whether you like it or not, and that's a fact!

But mostly, those rats make homes on the ground in the Muhley grass, Pampas etc.

No such thing as a palm rat, till the anti-palm establishment in TV got computers. You know, if it's on the internet, it must be true.

Bingo. You are correct! And the snakes love those places, too.
You always give good information.

Do the rats eat the palm or seeds? Do they require an additional source of food? or is the palm enough to sustain the critter.

Rats eat nuts, seeds, dog food, garbage, fallen fruit, vegetables and you can pretty much name it..
They do not eat the palm itself.

I remember when I was in college out for an evening with friends drinking down in an old Irish bar down in Greenwich Village. (New York City) We were walking back uptown in the wee hours of the morning and we saw so many huge rats scurrying around that we were careful where we stepped! There were no palm trees around! Roof rats live in trees, attics, and wherever they can. There are snakes, rats, squirrels, mice, bats, opossums, raccoons, spiders, coyotes, alligators, etc., in the Villages. Most of the time they aren’t a problem.
And the wiring in your cars. I have re wired a few cars in here from those rats.

Great response. Very informative and right on. Thanks very much. We have one as well. A male and love the tree. And, relatively slow growing.

And, TOTV might consider having a category each month of “best, most helpful, informative response” — yours would be at the top of the list. TOTV at its best.[/QUOTE]

My Sylvester is unsure about it identity. Is it something it will decide on it's own, or should I cut off any identifiers now?
