Default What grows when??

Since we are new to Florida, can anyone tell me what we could plant and when? We would like a small garden and have no idea what to plant. Where we came from, corn wasn't ready until late July/August and here I understand it's over here. We'd like some cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, carrots and maybe some other veggies. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Plant a veggie garden of any size and I'd suspect the local critters will discover it and declare it "The Neighborhood Buffet". They'll probably be having their meals there on a daily basis.

And no fences are allowed per the deed restrictions........

What about inside a birdcage? I remember recently hearing that a small percentage of space inside the birdcage is allowed for a modest amount of plantings. I think it was around 10%, but not sure. I think it may have come from our swimming pool/birdcage salesman but can't remember that for sure either.

Be sure to buy the type of plants that are meant for our area of the country (heat resistant). We have tried to plant tomatoes 4 years in a row. The first three in the ground and they didn't turn out well. This year we bought Phoenix plants and put them in a large pot with amended soil on the patio. We have loads of tomatoes this year and they are all beautiful. When we first moved here into a new area there were no bees to pollinate the flowers either. I think that may have been part of the problem.

Yes, containers are the way to go!

In my yard here, I can't even get weeds to grow. Gotta test that soil!
