Hi, I used Dr. Mascarenhas for my surgery but he is close to Tavares. He is excellent and I have been extremely happy with this care (its 4 years and counting). His affiliation is with Waterman Hospital, who I also liked very much. Since my surgery was out patient, it just meant a few trips to his office which is probably about 30 min away. I know there are other docs who specialize in breast cancer surgery who are closer and you'll probably get recommendations from members of TOTV that will be very helpful. If you need further advice, just private message me. Good luck and praying for you. KathieI

As a Home Health Care RN in the Villages, I frequently see patients of Dr Mascarenhas. The patients are very happy with him, they seem to do very well post-op. We rarely see any complication post-op and I think he uses some pretty innovative techniques.

Dr. Celia Nelson.
My Wife is an 8 year survivor because of her.
A very caring, humble, person whose world revolves around her patients!

I will provide my standard advice. When dealing with such serious medical issues, you will be hard pressed to find the best specialists in such a rural area as The Villages. You will be better served by specialists at a large university teaching hospital such as The University of Florida in Gainesville or The University of South Florida in Tampa. Wishing all the best for you!!

Again, from an RN who works daily with post-op patients and and all the surgeons in the area, I repeat... Dr Mascarenhas does an exceptional job with breast cancer patients. He is also competent in providing care in the event of post-op complications (which are few in his practice). From a personal standpoint, the other surgeon mentioned, was unable to come up with any solution for my complication following my breast surgery. I had to go to the emergency room to get treatment. Unfortunately, at that time, I did not know of Dr Mascarenhas. As for the other posts regarding medical issues..... Has no one heard of Moffitt Cancer Center or M D Anderson? If the issue is cancer...... where better would one look for help. These doctors are far more experienced in the field and you want knowledge and experience.

My spouse is a recent(June 2015 surgery) breast cancer survivor
We initially advanced locally, with input from her PCP, but I pushed(hard) for a second opinion outside the area even though transportation was going to be an issue. Like "NYGuy" says look beyone the closest available options. If you are planning reconstructive, then I recommend Moffitt(Tampa) where my wife was treated. What differentiates Moffett from local practices is that the doctor's work in teams. Specifically your consult will be with a cancer surgeon who helps you understand the Imaging from his radiologist(will reread yours if Imaging is up to parr) and then immediately thereafter you'll meet the plastic surgeon(on his;/her team) to explain reconstruction options. Gain as much information as possible to make your best and likely most important decision of the decade. The TriCou nty Breast Survivor Group(meets 2X/mo) in TV is a good resource. All the best

You are absolutely right, and when I referenced The University of South Florida in Tampa I was including Moffitt Cancer Center which is on the campus of the University and partners with many University Doctors/Professors. I do believe though that M D Anderson is no longer in Orlando and has been replaced by the University of Florida.
