Default Can Aleve be taken daily?

My husband has shoulder pain from tendonitis and the only thing that really helps is Aleve. But it says on the bottle not to take longer than 10 days. Does anyone know why he can't take it everyday? The commercials sure make it look like you can use it daily. I have looked up on the internet and it really doesn't say anything about not taking it on an on-going basis. Anyone with any experience with Aleve?

The benefit doesn't outweigh the damage. Aleve is very hard on the liver. Once in a while is fine, but daily would be very bad, especially if you are taking any other kind of medication.

My husband had should pain a few years back and after useless surgeries and a large amount of Ibuprofen we found out it was actually two discs in his neck that had fused. No more surgery but a good back doctor who ordered a home tension machine and he has stopped the ibuprofen. The main concern for the amount of those drugs is hard on the liver and can raise sugar levels. The are hard on the system for diabetics. He spent 1 1/2 yrs taking it and then to find out it was such a simple fix.

Mikark,

Im very interested in this home tension machine. Can you tell me what it is?

Also I think that Aleve is naproxen which is a different catagory of meds then Ibuprofen. Im wondering if they are both dangerous to liver function??

I strongly suggest you ask his doctor. Why take a risk? If your husband is in so much pain perhaps he needs a prescribed medication.

Nonie: Yes, naproxen and ibuprofen are two different drugs and both dangerous and hard on the liver. I knew someone who was taking over-the-counter- ibuprofen daily and died of ibuprofen poisoning.

Bottom line, your body is telling you something when you have constant pain. See your doctor or specialist. You may have to take prescribed meds and yes over time they will all affect your liver function, however, at least a doctor will be monitoring via blood tests. Best to take only necessary drugs and not abuse them.

Wow! Thanks golfpro, The Advil seems to work wonders but long term affects are a serious consideration.

We have seen his doctor. He gave him a cortisone shot and was going to give him a prescription of Aleve. We decided to go with the over the counter Aleve instead of the prescription strength because that was working fine. But it sounds like we need to be careful. Thanks, I'll make sure he doesn't over use it!

Schuler, It would be hard to know when he was overusing it until symptoms occur and then damage is done. It is better to be under the care of a physician and have routine liver function tests done. (In my humble opinion.) Any over the counter drug, especially those previously a prescription drug, have to be taken carefully and with your doctors knowledge. ...Again just my opinion.

Graciegirl, I agree. I take NSAIDS (aleve, motrin, ketoprofen, advil), everyday for an autoimmune condition. My Rheumatologist checks my kidney and liver function every three months.

Oh, I don't take all of the above....just explaining NSAIDS...Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs

As with any NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drug) caution is advised. This includes aspirin, Alleve (naproxen), ibuprofen and a multitude of others.
The 2 primary concerns are actually kidney function and gastric bleeding. Talk with your doc because a lot depends on age, co-morbid conditions, and other medicines. Anecdotally I will tell you I see more GI bleeds from alleve than most other NSAIDS but any of them can cause or contribute to the same issues. They CAN be taken safely in many circumstances but as always not without any risk.
