Harvard's Food Pyramid - For Those Interested in Nutrition
This is a healthier alternative to the USDA's flawed pyramid. Take a look:

I think that "new" pyramid is what healthy people already know. Now it just has to be translated to the masses.

the Villages will probably get pelted by a foot of snow before the masses adopt a predominantly plant-based diet with fresh, locally-grown nutritious foodstuffs. It's going to be nearly impossible with billions being poured into marketing and lobbying that favors fake food, and the creation of desire for sugar, fat, and other tastes. good food can taste good. we can learn what's good for us, prepare it or find it prepared to suit a taste. The taste can be acquired and developed. "Fat Free, Flavor Full' was one of our favorite books. Dr Gabe and Diana Mirkin put together recipes that satisfy the palate and keep the body in check for health. they recommend spices that can help fool the body into thinking the food is sweeter and more full of fat than it is. What we did notice is that we just felt better, felt younger, moved better, and had more energy. We ate more simply, and on a much lower budget. the best part was, we didn't have to buy into anyone's 'plan' , or order their special 'packaged meals' or take their supplements..... And a good diet crosses age, political, and even baseball-team-fan barriers L and L

It is interesting to see that this diet is probably very similar to the diet our parents or grandparents ate during the depression. Grains and vegetables were in much greater abundance than meat unless you lived on a farm.
Also of note is a study published in JAMA today that says that most vitamin supplements do not improve your health as much as a healthy diet. Last edited by graciegirl; 10-26-2010 at 08:16 PM. |

Fat Free, Flavor Full by Dr Gabe
By the way, we heard from the Author there might be a new book on the way about longevity.
After all, his mother is pushing 105 and is more that rumored to be living in Florida. In addition, he himself is benefitting from vitamin D 'supplements' NOT the Oral ones, but the natural Vitamin D one gets from Florida sunshine. When he lived in Maryland I used to fix his bikes and make house calls - and into his studio/home office when I needed a prescription - there was never a vitamin or supplement in the building. We know that between the Villages sunshine, easy lifestyle, and healthy food life can stay better longer There is just so much snake oil out there If it takes a 30 minute infomercial to sell you 'snake oil' be suspicious If we get enough interest we might be able to get Dr Gabe to come to a gathering in TV some day. Maybe even a TOTV lunch - and he can sign the books!! He made it to a bike club meeting last winter and had the biggest audience they ever had for a speaker - and the topic was not about biking, but how to live to 100 we get the weekly ezine - it used to cost $40 a year now free go to drmirkin.com We came down for the event We do splurge from time to time, but consider those 'feasts' and still enjoy the indulgence even had a few cookies at GG's affair, but we complimented them with some great fresh fruits and veggies To your health L and L

It was discussed on the Today show yesterday. Edited...I couldn't find it Freeda. I could have been dreaming, but I swear I heard it. bkcunningham will find it for us if it exists. The nutritionist discussing it made exceptions to vitamin D and calcium as needed supplements. I noted it because I personally feel that way. Although the people who sell supplements will say that our food is contaminated or unable to supply adequate nutrition. Both sides will say "Follow the money" about the other side. I say that today people don't feed themselves properly because it takes a little more work and probably a little more money to do so. Sorry to not be able to substantiate what I said about what I thought I heard on the Today show yesterday. Last edited by graciegirl; 10-27-2010 at 04:13 AM. |

Gracie, I don't know about the Today Show report, but I know what you are talking about as far as hearing about reports saying supplements in general not being as effective as a healthy diet and exercise.
I think we've all heard the controversies regarding the USDA food pyramid, the controversies with the Harvard food pyramid, the controversies with supplements, the controversies with food products...you know what I mean. I certainly don't want to demean anyone's beliefs, (I wouldn't want anyone to do that to me) but if you look can can find studies that produce the pros and cons to support most arguments. We all know people who never smoked and ate a healthy diet and exercised and developed .... (fill in the blank with your own experience, lung cancer, high cholesterol...). Or the opposite. We all know people who smoked, ate junk, drank too much et al., who lived to a ripe old age. Do what is right for you in your heart and spirit to the best of your ability. Enjoy life and don't hurt another human. Follow the ten commandments. Enjoy each day you are given. None of us have a promise of tomorrow. In my short time on this earth, I've experienced so many unexplainable things, I just put my trust in God and try (not always easy) to do my best to use commonsense. Opps, sorry to sound like I'm preaching. Back to the subject. In a quick search, I found this: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/ant...ements/MY00527 |
