My hearing loss is just slightly less than severe, in the "moderate" range in both ears, though one is a little better than the other. I'm ultra sensitive to high frequency and my midrange is so-so. The frequencies between middle and low are lousy, and improves as it approaches low frequency.

So basically if you want to talk "music" - dobro guitar and sliding guitar music gives me a headache and makes me want to put my hands over my ears. I have trouble understanding what Ozzy Osborne is singing, but can make out most of the words when Steve Perry sings. I can hear David Crosby's words, but Bob Dylan's elude me. I can hear the melodies they're singing, I just have no idea what they're singing about if I haven't ever read the lyrics.

With hearing aids, I can understand almost all of it. It's crisp and clear, but not overwhelming. Except the dobro guitar. That is still painful.
many of us STILL can't figure out what ozzy is saying!

My wife just thinks I don’t listen. I have a new angle now

OP, Please do not give up on your hearing aids. They needed to be set by an audiologist. If you purchased them locally, the office should do this for you. It may take more than one time. If you purchased them on line or over the counter, you may be able to find on line help or need to pay an audiologist for the service. It is important to retain your hearing for as long as you can. I am not in the hearing aid business, but another hearing aid wearer.

Default Hearing aids

I went to an audiologist and got Oticon hearing aides. Extremely expensive but came with a 5 year contract. He spent 4 weeks just adjusting the aides to suit me - no cost. They are connected to my phone and I can adjust the sound myself at any time. They are. Put on a charger every night so no battery changes by me. I have had to have the dr change the battery once but again it was covered. I have severe tinnitus and while the aides are in my ears it goes away. Love them for that! They even decrease the background noise to some extent which is when I have my biggest loss of sound. I have had some problems with them clogging due to ear wax but he taught me how to change out the inside piece and gave me extras to do that. I am amazed how much I was missing like birds singing. I recommend you don’t listen to those that tell you to just forget getting them. Dementia has been traced to hearing loss as has many other diseases.

Thanks goodness I don’t need hearing aids. It’s a total scam for pricing and none of them seem to work.

So basically you are saying, "I know nothing about hearing aids, never needed them, but I have a point of view based on a total lack of knowledge!
Makes you an expert to pass judgement?:

Pricing could be a total scam I don't question that, they do work. I got them about 6 months ago and it's amazing how I hear what I haven't heard in years. However, if a person does a little research on pricing they would head to Costco and purchase a $1399 pair of Kirklands that are made by Phonak one of the leading manufacturers of hearing aids. From my experience and talking to a friend who has had expensive hearing aids for years, he tells me my $1399 pair are as good as his that he paid $4000 for.

My mother was same.
Think she had lived in a silent world to long, and the sound was just too much to cope with.
I always believe (have no proof whatsoever) it was a major factor in her onset of dementia.

Dad's doctor has warned him about this. It is so sad. Mom passed in Feb. from having dementia for 15 years, now Dad is showing the symptoms. I've been their caretaker for the past 9 years.

With my UHC TV advantage I purchased a pair of Relate BTE's made by Phonak for $850. Absolutely best I have had. I have been wearing hearing aids for over 20 years and these are the best yet. I hear birds chirping like never before, actually understand many more words in songs, and am able to understand women's voices much better. BTW way my problem is near severe mid to high frequency loss. These hearing aids have many bells and whistles like Bluetooth connection to listen to music and podcasts, in ear phone reception, and a smartphone app with a bunch of programs to enhance speech recognition and/or suppress noise. I could not be more satisfied if I paid several thousand $ (which I have in the past). Incidentally, with my previous Oticon's I had problems with the ear tips continually coming off and lodging inside my ear . The Relate/Phonak have a modified tip design the so far over 3 months have not shown even a hint of slipping off.

Default Hearing Loss Support Group

There is a support group in the Villages for people with hearing loss. It meets monthly at the Eisenhower Rec Center at 9:30 the fourth Wednesday of every month. The next meeting is May 25th. The program will feature a discussion of a new cochlear implant that’s paired with bone conduction from Cochlear America. There will be time for a general Q and A session on hearing aids and other audiology topics. All are welcome!

So here's the thing with Ozzy - I can't understand a word he says. But I can understand him when he sings. His enunciation changes profoundly when he's putting his words to a melody!

My favorite mis-remembered Ozzy lyrics:

Times are tough, times are hard
here's your f***** christmas card
Mama I'm coming home.
