Can anyone recommend a good Home health service in the Area? Husband is having cancer treatments and becomes too weak to lift himself from bed to wheelchair. I used Gentiva Service, but they do not provide any type of lifting or transfer service. Also need a transportations service to take him in his wheelchair to Doctor treatments. I've found one. Eagle Trans, but it is $110 round trip. we also used the local Sumpter trans, but his chair kept lifting, when the driver turned a corner. It took over 2 hours to get to appointment, since the van made several stops.

I have a family member who uses Comfort Keepers. All staff who come to his home are clean, neat, kindly, competent. They take him to doctor appointments or grocery shopping or whatever he needs. We tried another service before them, who were far below this standard yet charged the same price.
My heart goes out to you. What a difficult time you must be having. If Comfort Keepers does not perform the care you need, perhaps they would have a good recommendation for that service. Good care is everything. |

I don't know about Florida but in Michigan the Department on Aging is a great source to find help at home for those in need. Friends have used them for housecleaning., helping with showers, washing hair, etc. They had to be medically unable to perform these chores themselves. They also had volunteers that took patients to doctor appointments.
When my dad was sick, hospice came to our house and were also a huge help. We learned at that time that it does not have to be a life or death situation.

Medicare might assist you in the cost of a lift--easy to use to transfer patients from wheelchair to bed. You have to be comfortable in the handling of the machine- but it doesn't take any strength by you to use the equipment. Even the smallest person can lift someone.
These types of equipment also can assist you with transfers from wheelchair to car. The biggest problem is lifting the wheelchair for the car. I had my dad here and was unable to get assistance needed for doctor appts without paying a big fee. If he is long term in a chair-- I would recommend trying a handicap van if you drive. Good luck, sorry no advice on home health. |

You should contact your patient navigator in your Oncologist's office. They are invaluable in assisting with EVERYTHING - including putting your mind at ease. Prayers, my friend. I've been caregiver to my husband who has Parkinsons for four years. He's been in a wheelchair for two and was diagnosed with a malignant tumor in October. His treatments have been extremely difficult on him and I sure feel for you. Hope you find the perfect caregiver. You will...and it will take a huge load off of you both.

I met a woman today in the Leesbury Hospital parking lot, while she was putting her husband into her car. She was using the Freedom Mobility chair in her van. Her husband is going thru the same procedures as my husband, with chemo, etc. and is unable to use his legs, due to weakness. The Freedom mobility chair in her car has changed their lifes. No more $120 fares to the doctors or treatments/ Plus now, they can even plan nights out to dinner, friends homes, etc. This is a very expensive investment, but I'm going to look into it. and maybe sometime in the future, will be able to share with others when they are in desperate need as we are currently. Thanks to you all

She can also help you with arranging for vans etc. You can also apply for a transport through Sumter Connections, they are located on Powell Rd. Depending on your financial situation, you may be able to a get a van for $3.00 each way. I just set this up with a client I had. There are lots of services.. Mary 352-874 7870 |
