Default Shingles vaccine available this year. To get or not to get??

Can anyone offer their opinions/knowledge regarding the wisdom of getting the shot?
The following is typical of the many sites offering Q & A on the matter:

http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vpd-vac/...s/vac-faqs.htm

We do have part D and the co pay with our insurer is $70. We have never given it a second thought until it was present as an opportunity in The Daily Sun within the clinics to be held here in TV.

I will be contacting our family physician in the coming days, but would appreciate any other inputs.

GET THE SHINGLES SHOT!!!

My wife is currently recovering from Shingles, accompanied by a secondary infection. It was the most intense, debilitating pain she has ever experienced - including child birth!

In her case, the Shingles virus attacked her optic nerve, causing excruciating pain behind and around her left eye. The secondary infection was also in the same location. She developed lesions on her left forehead and scalp, as well as on her left cornea.

The pain became so bad, she was hospitalized for five days. Her left eye was swollen completely shut. She looked like someone had slugged her in the eye with their fist.

She has been home for two days now and is resting fairly comfortably. We are hoping she will be completely recovered in about 10 days - a grand total of four weeks fighting this.

GET THE SHOT... I DID.

My mother had shingles when I was a kid and I remember the pain she was in. That convinced me to get mine which I did two years ago.

Unhappy Shingles

I had Shingles about 5 years ago and have the scars to prove it. I was lucky. The only infected area was the right side of my neck and around my right ear down the back of my head. The pain was horrible. Even now when under a lot of stress I will have pain. For me there is no shot I can have to help this so if I were you and had Chicken Pox when you were a kid, get the shot.

I am not a medical person, but Herpes Zoster that causes chicken pox can and does reoccur in the form of shingles. My husband sweetie had shingles right after our grandson had chicken pox and it hurt awfully.

I have read that sometimes our immune system becomes more vulnerable to shingles as we get older.

I am going to get the shot. They are offering them in TV? When and where?

We are in Ohio now and I appreciate the heads up!

I had the shot last year and had no after effects. I would recommend it highly.

I don't know about the benefit of the shot, its good to ask your doc about that, but I did have the shingles after my brain surgery when my immune system was at its lowest, and it was extremely painful even tho we were lucky to catch it early. Like Pat, PGB, if I'm having a stressful time, I still get very serious pain right through my chest into my back.

GG, yes, they are giving the shots along with flu shots over in colony, I already have my appt set up. I forget the link that I used to make the appt. If I find it, I'll repost it. My appt is in late Sept.

Champ, please give your wife our good wishes and we hope she feels better real soon. I'm sorry she had to go through that awful ordeal.

Default Shingles Vaccine

You can pick up the vaccination applications at the recreation centers. They said that they'd like you to sign up for a specific time/place so they have enough serum on hand.

All the times are 9-3:
Mon. 9/14 Paradise Rec Center
Tues 9/15 Savannah Rec Center
Wed 9/16 Lake Miona
Thurs 9/17 Colony Cottage
Fri 9/18 Laurel Manor
Sat 9/19 Mulberry Grove
Mon 10/12 Colony Cottage
Tues 10/13 Paradise

Influenza $25
Pneumonia $45
Tetanus $40
Shingles $225 and worth every penny!

Hope this helps,
Judy
PS: For some reason all my fancy spacing isn't working. Sorry if it's hard to read.

Default shingles

I got shingles last year in my right leg. The pain lasted for 8 months and was terrible. There is a small portion of my leg that now feels as if it's been pumped full of novocaine.

A few weeks ago, I had to go for minor surgery, and because of the stress, the shingles came back in my leg, causing the surgery to be cancelled. The surgeon felt complications could occur and postponed the procedure. It's now 2 months later, and I'm back on the surgery schedule, but still feeling the neuralgia and discomfort.

I've been advising everyone I know to get the shot...learn my my suffering. Wish I had known about this before it happened to me.

Both my wife and I have had shingles on two occasions. (Not unusual) If you can afford the shot - get it. Shingles, if you get it, can last for months or years if you get a bad case.

Some background ...The Shingles vaccine is recommended for those over 60, but, not if you have a weakened immune system and a few other conditions (do your research or ask your doctor). The vaccine was first approved for use in 2006 which explains why it seems to be a recent, but highly publicized, vaccine.

So, for those of you who have had shingles or know of folks who got shingles.... were all the victims over 60, under 60, or a mix -- when first afflicted?

I have to admit... I never knew what shingles was or heard of persons with the affliction until these past 2 years.

Hubby & I had shingles shot last year and no ill effects due to it. Our primary care strongly recommended we both have it whether our group coverage paid for it or not. As it happened, it was covered at 100%.

Is getting the shot a one time thing or is it required yearly?
